Because of the trouble shifting with cold-weather gloves, my wife wants me to replace her Sram 3.0 twist shifter with rapidfire-style shifters. The rear derailleur is Sram 3.0 with a 7 speed freewheel, front is Shimano Tourney with 3 chainrings (I know this is low end stuff). The Sram site states the r.d. is compatible with SRAM 1:1 shifters.

Price is a concern.

Can I use a 8 speed rapidfire shifter (Sram or Shimano) with this, or do I need to get the exact Sram shifter for this r.d.? Any other advice about how to proceed on this convertion is welcome!

Since the RD is a SRAM model (right?), you'll have to have a SRAM shifter. As the website mentions, the SRAM is 1:1 - the Shimano is not. The FD is generally not an issue since it's usually shifted via friction (no "real" detents to indicate "gears").

If not, then you would need a shimano 7 speed shifter and compatible RD. 8 speed cog spacing is close enough to 7 that an 8 speed sram esp shifter might work. Sram also has a trigger front shifter that will work with your current FD.

I asked Sheldon Brown about this, and here is his reply:

"The 1:1 stuff, also known as ESP is the only stuff that's compatible
with that rear derailer. They don't make any 7-speed trigger
shifters in the ESP series, only 9-speed.

You could replace the rear derailer...derailers are cheap. With a
Shimano or a non-ESP Sram derailer, you could use any Shimano shifter."

Thanks everybody for your replies and advice!
