Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Looks like a single speed. Chances are the components were stolen to begin with.:D

A few weeks ago I bought a 70 something Raleigh Record 10 speed on ebay for ten bucks and my brother asked me "why would you buy that piece of junk?" I just sent him that pic and now he gets it. I live and work in a giant cesspool where anything goes. I feel like putting a sheet over it like they would a homicide victim...for a last shred of dignity. For some reason the chain just laying there with nothing to do got to me, like a jumper sprawled out on the sidewalk for the whole city to see his insides. I am gonna go get a sheet now

THIS is why I won't depend on any bike lock to "protect" my bikes.
I believe in "all hazard" bike insurance to "protect" my bike (and my wallet).
NewYork Gold left in the streets a street named I don't know how to lock up my bike on 5th and 4th

The thief had every tool he needed except a crank puller.

The thief took everything but the real treasure...A gold chromoly steel frame!...What a fool!
This is further proof that thieves are genuine idiots!

Or the crank arms were 175's not 172.5's :D

Maybe the guy takes all those parts off his bike before he locks it up so they don't get stolen . . . . lol.

how much do you pay for the insurance? just curious as never really looked at insurance and was wondering. oh and does the price include replacement policy in it? if i do get insurance(along with my locks) plan on getting that included. ack sorry 1 more and does using better locks possibly get you a discount on the additional charge? hmm probably that depends on the insurance people and coverage id guess.

I have never disassembled a bike completely, but wouldn't one only need a set of metric allen keys to remove all the parts and leave what is depicted above?

I wonder where one might find a compact tool for stealing bike parts?

Man, the headset?, Really?
I wonder how long it took 'em to strip the parts.
Life in the big city, I guess.

I don't see the logic in it. It is hard to make out what kind of lock is used, but for such a dedicated thief wouldn't it be much easier (and faster) to cut the lock and steal the whole bike intact?
For this reason, to me it doesn't look like a single-event theft. It looks more like an abandoned bike that was left in the street for a long time, losing part after part until it eventually got to the stage we see in the picture.

Folks. I used to work in that area and there are tons of people walking down that block and no one did anything. It goes to show you the idea of leaving your bike in full view does not protect your bike at all! I seen an MTB in FULL in a court yard not far from this location in FULL VIEW stripped of parts.
Hide the bike is far better.

Is that on 53rd and Broadway/7th? If so, I think I walked past that bike.....

Seems to be one crappy area if that kind of thing happens. What other moronic activities happen there?

Most likely the bike was abandoned for a long time. It was an eye sore that caused the property owner difficulty. So if you feel sorry for someone feel sorry for the people who manage the nearby buildings.
It doesn't show up on Google street view. MOMA 37 W 53rd Perhaps it was an art installation.
That ain't art, that's NYC. Anything left out overnight will become property of crackheads eventually. Heck I've been tourists stand around and take vacation photos of a guy taking an angle grinder to bikes locked up in Union Square. Cops all around couldn't care less.

If I had to live in a big city, I would never ever spend any money for anything but a folding bike--and it would never get left outdoors.
