I took some photos of a display in the United Nations General Assembly
lobby here in New York City. The theme is sustainable communities.

The only problem I see with the display is, the bikes in the pictures look like they are from the 1800's. This is 2011.:notamused:

Interesting idea. Modules that allow easy shipping and the rest is built out of local materials.

great pics, thanks for sharing.

I think the trailer is right on, the bike module less so. World Bicycle Relief designs and manufacturers bikes of a couple of varieties for real world Africa conditions, that are stout and well engineered for good service life and good serviceability on the continent. people can earn the bikes, the organization sets up native mechanics in the field....

if you want to do something for the cause of mobility in Africa, world bicycle relief is A#1 .

Perhaps. But in this example the only thing that looks "local" is that big freaking plank in the middle...

Interesting concept. I see the difficulty in that the parts requiring the most maintenance/repair (tires, chains, bearings) are not the target of local replacement. Frames that don't break for decades of use have been available for over 50 years. Seems silly to bolt a hunk of local plywood in there when even that will likely outlast the headset and hubs...

It might control population growth in an unexpected way; any man who rides it will get castrated by the jury rigged frame. (that guide wire above the top tube... err, plank)

And I think a wooden plank like that would be hard to find in Africa. Really. There aren't many lumber stores, and the houses are wooden framed like here in America.
