Classic & Vintage - super vitus 980 peugeot

which years and what models of peugeot are using this type of tubing? thanks

I am not the expert on this, but I am pretty sure the first model year was 1982. I am not sure how long they ran with it. Here is my 83 PSV 10. It looks similar to the 82

Chombi and Scozim will most likely chime in here and give you some accurate info on these bikes. Mine has a couple of upgrades, and is my lightest bike(other than a Carbon Trek)

About '82 to '87. PSN/PSV10. I think they may have done one other model before '85, but that is it.

The main triangle and fork of some of the triathlon models were 980 as well. The stays seem to be some mystery steel though.

Seems to me they started around 1982 and finished with the Triathlon and PSN10 with that tubing in 1987 or 1988. Super Vitus tubing is my favorite frame material to ride. My 983 equipped Gitane is respectably light, nimble and a great climber. If I had a 980 Peugeot in my size it would see a lot of miles every year.

The best ones eye-candy-wise were the light silver-blue one's from the very early 80s. Know a family who's patriarch died owning one - never ridden - with mostly Stronglight parts. Was very light at the time for a steel bike.

I think the PSV first came to be with the 82 model, 84 was PSV's last year. The SV980 frame was carried on by the PSN (With Campagnolo Victory Gruppo) and Triathlon models till 87 and that was it for SV980 on Peugeot bikes,.....at least for the US market.

82-83 PSV10 with tubulars. Normal seat post pinch bolts. French/Swiss threading.

84 there were 2 models PSV10N with clinchers and PSV10L with tublars. Goofy behind the seat tube set screw for seat post. French/Swiss threading.

'85-'86 PSN10 and Triathlon clincher modesl with intenally binding seatposts. FULL Super Vitus tubing. BSA threading. Triathlon has 32rd set bottle bosses.

'87 PSN10 and Triathlon models. PSN10 Mont Cenis with full SV tubing, Triathlon with main tubes and fork SV. BSA threading. Triathlon may have conventional seatpost binder bolt. PSN10 has internally expanding post.

The only difference to this list (at least in my shop) is the 84' PSV10 hanging on my wall which has an english threaded bb. I'm not sure about the headset. My brother switched out the bottom bracket on the '84 PSV I unfortunately gave him and it also had an english threaded bb.

Thats certainly a possibility. Catalogs prior to '85 dont differentiate threading so it's members like yourself who provide additional information to fill the gaps!! Somrtimes its possible to fit British BB's into Swiss frames.

PSN10T60 =

P = Peugeot
S= Super Vitus tubing
N= Clinchers
10 = racing series
T = either a color code for tulip red or suffix designation for Triathlon
60 = frame szie in CM

The serial number under the BB will tell year and month of frame production.

Yes, January of 1986 for the frame, 72320 would be the sequential number the frame. 478936 would be the sequential number or internal code for the model. Does your right pedal 'click' on the down stroke? I only ask becasue the fixed cup appears loose...but it could be an illusion.

As far as I've been able to determine 'E' means 'different than' I think it simply means different than the previous version as in a slight specification change.

No click, fixed cup is tight... goofy camera angle trying to get stamped characters to show. Thanks for the info Jim.

And it not as clean as the pics seem to show RNDM. It was well used when I got it, and I keep on using it ;-)

btw, how is super vitus 980 comparing reynold 531 or other materials in stiffness, riding quality if same geometry? their weight is roughly same, am i right?

IIRC, from circulating tubeset tables I've read through the years, the weight of the SV980 tubset is comaprable to what the Reynold 753 weighs in at. but maybe the special heat treatment of the 753 makes it stiffer. SV980 also features a rifled head or steerer tube (can't remember exactly which one.)
So you can maybe consider the SV980 as falling in between Reynolds 531 and 753.
