Mountain - Plains - Cycling in Laramie

There's a remote possibility that next year, the wife may be pursuing her Ph.D. in Laramie...

I'm trying not to sound disappointed when she talks about going to Laramie. So tell me, what is there to Laramie's bicycling culture? Is there anything I should be excited about with bicycling in Laramie?

Well, when I was up there a few weeks ago, I was walking on the bridge over the rail-yard just west of downtown. I was nearly run down by a hipster on a Pista :rolleyes:

I am assuming that due to the lack of response in this thread... cycling in Laramie either a) sucks or b) is non-existent.

Bicycle tour of colorado is spending the night in laramie this coming yr so there must be enuf cycling infrastructure
to support a route into and out of there

I haven't spent any time in Laramie. I have ridden and driven in the general area, and don't have anything nice to say, sorry. The above image sums it up for me.

It's about an hour drive to Ft. Collins which has an active racing and riding scene.

I don't agree w/colorado dale's assesment that BTC route necessarily means it's a good town for cycling. The route passes through there on the way to Hwy 130/Snowy Range, which is one great ride.

There's a stage race out of Laramie - Dead Dog Classic - maybe their web site could lead to some information sources for you.

edit to add: sorry to be negative. but a PhD isn't forever, and it's gotta be better than Lansing MI where I went to grad school.

As I told my wife, I'll make do wherever she goes. It is more important that she gets a Ph.D. she wants than I live in a hip, cool, urban environment.

Many, many years ago (early 1970's) I interviewed for a professorship in Laramie. We met with a realtor. There was exactly one house for sale in the whole town.

Our singing group (http://www.xyzingers.info) has been invited to sing in Laramie in January.

All of Wyoming is windy.

I get it now. Laramie is so uncool that it is cool.

curt gowdy state park is between laramie and chyenne, and has some decent trails. it's something.

oh, in addition to it being windy, it hails in june. enjoy.

I lived in Sheridan for several years and it was not windy in that area. Protected by the Bighorn Mtns I guess.

I'm still waiting for someone in Laramie to post and show us how awesome Laramie is for cycling.

Of course, this thread has convinced me one of two things. Either, there are no cyclists in Laramie, or Laramie is so remote that they have no Internet access.

I have a work colleague that lives in Laramie/Centennial. He says him and his wife ride road bikes. But I have not been able to pry any more specific information out of him about riding in that area. I think UW has a road cycling team, so I assume people do ride there. Probably mostly from west to east :)

I raced in Laramie last weekend. It was really windy. I wouldn't want to live there forever but it would probably be manageable for a short time.

The snowy range is beautiful.

I am pleased that someone got my distorted senseof humor. No, not really THAT bad there, but I once asked a resident of one of the towns further west (perhaps Rawlins) if the wind EVER stopped blowing, and the answer was "no." Laramie, being situated closer to the mtns, may have a different wind factor.

40 years ago I turned down a professorship at the U of WY in Laramie because my son, with a disability, often needed specialized medical care, and we were told that Laramie would become "snow bound" and there was no way to get to Cheyenne or Denver, and Laramie did not have that care. I am sure things are different now.

I was at my race with a woman who lived there for several years. She said in summer it was windy most of the time, and in winter it was bitterly cold. It's definitely a small town. It has some small-town charm, the campus is beautiful, but i felt that the small-town-poverty / lack of wider culture would outweigh that.

They have bicycles in Laramie??? I though everybody either has a horse or a pick-up truck ... more likely both.

p.s. Have done some geology in the Owl Creek/Big Horn area. Came to love Wyoming, but then again I never had to winter over. I hear that wintering over in Antarctica is more pleasant than a winter in Wyoming. And to think that WY is on my short list of places to retire.

Fortunately, the wife decided to pursue a Ph.D. elsewhere. We have settled here in Edgewater.

^all 3 blocks of it? good choice, I see a lot of TT bikes being sold from Laramie on CL. they usually all mention they can't ride them up there.
and dnvr, the joke is if the wind stops blowing in Laramie half of the houses fall over.
