The thief kept looking at this 12 y/o kid thinking, "He's just a kid. No worries there!"...Huh! That became his undoing!

Try reading it again; I don't think that they let 12 year olds enter the RAGBRAI, and I'm pretty sure that 12 year olds don't write at the level that Mr. Elliot does.
It is an interesting read, regardless (hey, I used to read Hardy Boys too!). The blogger shows some dedication to his bike shop (and to justice) following a thief about the city on his daily rounds; I probably would've called the cops and the bike shop and gone about my business. Good on Mr. Elliot! Although it sucks that the cop car he rode in struck a cyclist, and more so that it didn't stop.

I wish I could tell twelve year old me about my New York bike thief adventure. Those Hardy Boys books really paid off.
I'd say "twelve year old me" is a reference to an age when he enjoyed the Hardy mysteries.
So here's a (possibly stupid) question: How do you make the choice of which person to follow? If you stay with the thief, there's the chance that he won't give up the name of the buyer (and thus not get the bike back); If you stay with the buyer & bike, there's the chance that the thief will never be caught. Right? Of course, I'm assuming a situation where you weren't able to take pics.
Also, what's with the name of the taqueria? I thought pinche was a no-no word. My Spanish is muy malo.

I am not sure I would have posted this on a blog with my own name on it. Think it's great what he did, but if these thieves ever find out who he is and considering that they spend time in the same areas, this is a retribution beatdown waiting to happen.

I'm glad they caught the thief, but an unmarked cop car can hit a cyclist and just drive off?

I wouldnt worry so much about that. I dont know about the laws there but Im guessing hes going to see a decent bit of jail time. Mainly because the value of the bike being 3k making it a class b felony or possibly grand theft(not to be confused with grand theft auto) depending on the laws there. Though the guy that bought it depending on whether hes do it before and got busted will probably get off much lighter.

Love it when thieves get caught. Nothing worse than a thief! This is the only time I agree with the Muslims. Cut a hand off!!
