I drive a Kia Soul and don't want to deal with buying and installing a hitch for an over priced hitch carrier.

I'm for a single bike carrier for a car that has a back hatch, instead of a "trunk.' Something for an SUV/CUV.

I've been eyeing the Saris Solo, but wanted to hear some other opinions. Is the Saris Solo a good choice? Or are there any other alternatives?

Here's a link to the Saris Solo if anyone hasn't seen it...

I definitely wouldn't buy an overpriced hitch rack either. I've only bought and use appropriately priced hitch racks.

That Solo rack works well and is really small and lightweight. One thing I've done using such racks is to put adhesive clear plastic over the places where the rack contacts the paint on the car. Even though the pads are soft and won't mar the paint themselves, dirt and grit that gets between them and the pain eventually will. Do the same for the top tube of your bike if you are concerned about it.

Why not just throw the soul into the front basket on the bicycle? Or, couldn't you just have the hamsters drive it where it needs to go while you ride?

Looks like on a squareback vehicle, the bike comes awfully close to the car. I would be worried about it hitting the painted finish.

Saris makes good stuff but I would spend a the extra $$ and get a two-bike Saris Bones rack. It's more versatile, carries more weight, and they have been getting great reviews. And hey, if you ever want to take a friend riding with you, you'll have the space for another bike. :)

my fastback/hatch back was from the raingutter era,
but it worked, 1 rail on the roof, the other on the rear lid
roof rack tray connects the 2, and the bike is up off the bumper,
to be less vulnerable to the inattention of the guy behind you.

Thank you guys for your input. I'll check out the Saris Bones, it's been at the back of my head, but i figured i wouldn't need a 2 bike rack. Now, you're making me reconsider.

Also, fietsbob, do you know where i could find such a carrier?
