Walking. Or tottering might be more appropriate. After my backwards tumble down our 2nd floor stairs a month ago I have embarked on a regime of daily walking. Its what got me back three years ago when I had a back injury then. I don't know if it is the three years of cycling regularly but as I look at my journal I find that I am far ahead of where I was in the first month following that event. Hardest part Saturday morning was seeing a group of lean young cyclists sail past on their Club ride. How I envied them.

I can't think of anything better than walking for active recovery.
Hmmm, I haven't hit my mile yet, but I'm also spending time on the stationary bike since my back fusion in August. T7-12... I walk on the treadmill since I'm still wearing a cervical collar (broke my neck too in the bike crash). I'm up to 20 minutes though. I'm still not real steady on my feet so the treadmill offers safety.

Keep on tru...................uh................walking!
Good luck to you but if you want to see youth envy, I live within a couple of miles of the primary flight training facility for the Navy, USMC & Coast Guard. Was talking to one the other day who had just graduated and was being transferred to an F18 squadron, almost couldn't stand it.

Yeah Tom, you should work onboard Whiting Field and be there for an HT squadron winging. those young men and women are on top of the world and swapping tales about the various RAG squadron assignments they have as newly minted helicopter pilots! I always envy them, especially the Marines that will be flying snakes.

Same Here! And, to quote a now-defunct TV show: "let's be careful out there!"

I started at the same place as you. It was DAMN HARD at first!! I remember doing 1 or 2 miles on my bike and ashamedly turning around. But I was out there doing it and that's all that mattered!
This past summer I did my first 50 mile ride. It was the Tour de Peaks here in my home town of Snoqualmie WA. At the finish I laid in the grass and REVELED in the joy of having successfully completed that ride!!!!!!
I am now 50 lbs lighter and feeling sooooo muuuuuch better and it's all about getting active and eating better. Mind over FAT!!
Set some short term and long term goals and work towards them. Cycling is as much mental as it is physical. Same with diet changes.
Welcome to the active lifestyle! It ROX!!

Couple of points- I do not walk far-I can't before the knees give out but after a couple of Surgical ops- I walked. It hurt and the first walk was only 1/2 mile. 1/4 mile to a shop and 1/4 mile back. That was on a Saturday and 7 days later I walked 1 mile into town and 1 mile back. It was a while before I could walk comfortably but that was when I started upping the speed.
Youir body-Or in your case your back-Will let you know how far you can push it. Normally when you have gone just that little bit too far so watch out.

Broke my back in a major fall from a building 1/2/2008. Crushed 2 vertebrae, herniated a disc, and compressed 2 others, I'm now 2" shorter. Three months later decided to buy a motorcycle, rode it 7600 miles alone from S.Fl to N.Ca and back in 10 days. Below is a pic of the bike, notice it's a hardtail. It's also not exactly set up for traveling so I only carried what would fit in my pockets.
Keep on striving to overcome and you WILL succeed. Pain is only a signal communicated to the mind, it can be filtered with training and pushed through. Never let discomfort keep you from living your life, or achieving your goals.
