Fifty Plus (50+) - Possible cycling with Stapfam. I'm scared!

Just got back to Bahrain from a trip to UK. I took my Undergrad at the Univ of Sussex, close to Brighton, on the south coast of England. My daughter just took the same course at the same school. She and I share the same love of the town and the area.

So, as a possible exit strategy from where I am now, spouse and I put a deposit on a flat (retirement size) in Brighton. The thought is to maybe put a tenant in it till my time here is up in 3 or 4 years time, and then to move in.

But blimey. There's a scrawny tough old ex-marine on this forum who'll probably track me down, entice me into rides, and laugh diabolically as my bones melt.

If we are going offroad-I am going as Stoker. The speed that Beast gets up to on the downhills if frightening so I just close my eyes and think of England. Not good if the Pilot closes hid eyes.

But Brighton offers so many types of riding.Offroad and the South Downs are just a few miles and a lot of sweat and tears to get to. Road and you name it and you have it. Flat routes- hilly routes- Lots of rollers if you want and then the Hilly parts up and over the Downs. All you have to put up with are the thousands of cycling Students and the traffic.

But welcome the chance to ride with another slow rider when you get here. All I have as ride mates are young fit wanna bee racers that disappear into the distance after a mile or so. I might be able to let your tyres down to 60psi and get the brakes binding so I can keep you in sight for 5 miles.

And property in Brighton is holding it's Price and is bucking the trend for the rest of the area. Only problem is that it has too many Night Clubs and Bars that attract the riff raff from local towns up to about 20 miles away. So if you just want a quiet drink you have to come out to a decent Pub just North East and then the only problem is do I drink "Harveys"- or "Shepherd and Neame" Bitter is Harveys but Good ale is Shepherd and Neame.-What a choice to have to make.

Uh-oh...sounds like we'll need to send Beverly over to provide some adult supervision.

A little hint - shhh!! . . .

Stapfam has several times mentioned lowering the pressure in other folks tires - to sort of "even things out" a bit.

I suggest that you buy the flat but don't rent it. Leave the key under the mat for your fellow Bike Forum members. In return we promise to leave a bottle of wine and challenge Stap to some rides. When you retire in 4 years you will have 208 bottles of wine and Stap will be so worn out you will beat him easily.

But, but think of all the good it would do for the folks across the pond (snicker - always wanted to write that) to have a home to come to whenever they visit? Who cares about $$$ when you can do so much good for your fellow rider?

I think if you are captain and Stapfam is stoker the fear should be pretty much removed.... and I have to say I admire Stapfam for that - I have yet to take the stoker position despite starting tandem cycling a year or so ago.... I have a few cycling friends I wil trust someday, but the prospect still scares the pants off me on road, never mind off!

I always make certain I have a Pilot with strong upper body strength. That T is tough to steer offroad. But I have taken a few new riders out with me as Pilot. One memorable one that rode a Road bike and was fit. Few miles of trails and then up Windover hill and he was a good strong rider. Across the top of the Downs and into the Forest and down a rough trail to the bottom of the valley and he asked me to stop the Tandem. He got out his Mobile phone and phoned his wife to come and collect him. He was not getting on that bike again. Left me to ride the T solo back up the hill and home. A 55lbs bike is not the easiest to get up a 2 mile trail at 8%.

But I am getting worried about Wobbly now. I come from the adjacent County of Kent and Know the beers that I like and can generrally find them. Looks like Wobbly knows the good Sussex ales and will be educating me in them. Harveys alone has 15 Cask brewed beers- let alone the ales So anyone know of a good cure for Hangovers?

Just had a closer look at the property wobbly is buying and I think it is not suitable. Nowhere to put the bikes except in the hallway and I should think the maid will not be pleased after an offroad ride. All that mud to clear up.
