Classic & Vintage - Centurion Iron Man Restoration

Not exactly a restoration, but more of a complete overhaul. I have a 1986 Ironman Dave Scott that had some pretty rough paint. Lots of chipping and missing paint and some rust at the top of the seat tube motivated me to get a repaint and do complete strip down and rebuild. Here she was before

So I completely disassembled her and took her to one of the local powdercoaters to get walnut shell blasted and coated. Took about a week and she came back looking great. I did have to spend a few hours scraping the paint off the shifter bosses and a few other areas for bolt clearance which was a pain, but I assumed I was going to have to do it.

Only trouble I ran into during the rebuild was the notches on the rear shifter all fell off, literally, onto the ground. So right now I am running a shimano 600 tri-color rear shifter and derailleur but everything else is original shimano 600 ex. I will probably end up converting it completely to tri-color soon, but I have no complaints right now with the combo. I was planning on running the original gold araya wheels but do to the shifter failure, I am running shimano 600 hub laced to mavic open pro in rear, and front is dura-ace to open pro Performance special. Really enjoying the bike so far and hope that she will last me many years to come.

Nice work. The frame looks great refinished. I just bought the same bike in a 48cm frame.

Looks great and that fishing rig is awesome.

it looks like with a little work (maybe an outrigger and some 2 inch roly polys) you could troll for lake trout with that outfit.

Thanks for the compliments guys, I felt kind of bad repainting the bike being a C&V guy, but this is my daily rider and I wanted her around for a while. This is by far the smoothest riding bike I have ever owned and didn't want to see her rust anymore. The old paint would flake off with the slightest touch. Too bad most powdercoaters can only do one color, I would have liked to incorporate some red in there, but I still think she came out well.

Looks good. I'd throw some custom decals on there if I were you because the white does look a little sterile for my tastes. Another thought is to do some pinstriping by hand around the lugs.

While it's a fantastic looking restoration, I'd sure love to know where "Raw Leaf, Norf Kakalaki" is :/, because I'm clueless!

I always use black bartape because it tends to remain that color. White tape is only white until the first time you have to work on your bike/chain while riding. Black riding shorts/pants and bartape are just easier to stain without anyone noticing.

Yeh I think I am going to go the custom decal route. I have never been a fan of the Ironman sticker on the top tube, I'm tired of responding "no, I only ride bikes" when people ask me about Ironmans. I was thinking of putting the just the Centurion sticker from the 1985 Centurion Cinelli Equipe motif (http://www.velocals.com/servlet/the-357/Centurion-Cinelli-Equipe/Detail) on the down tubes, and just Dave Scott's signature on the top tube. Not sure on which headbadge sticker yet, you still got that custom cinelli ones Robbie?

Now to my question, what is the best printer paper to print decals on a inkjet? Do you spray any clearcoat or anything over it?

Inkjet ink is water soluable, so you would have to laminate or clearcoat it. Laser printer is more water resistant but still should be covered because it is pretty thin. Some one had a thread recently about making homemade decals using an inkjet printer.

And, if you can get the proper film/paper/media, whatever is used, I have a laser color printer.
I'd be glad to print out a sheet for you.

I've heard the same questions when riding an Ironman. None of them have a clue who Dave Scott is.

Also, for anyone who thinks Frankie painted an Ironman because he's a hipster...

Thanks for the kind words Robbie, hahahahaha. Yeh no hipster here, I do not do any shifter boss or derailleur mount filing which is really the worst thing they do.

Yeh, I am going to get one of my computer savvy friends to export just the signature from the top-tube graphic. Anybody have any decal paper recommendations? I have found the following, are most inkjet paper the same?
