Well I mentioned it before but with school taking the majority of my day and next semester will be even busier. This will be my last full project for quite some time. Basically until after I graduate this May and then where ever we decide to move to afterwards. I picked this up from fellow C&V'er Michael Angelo two months ago and finally got the funds to get it painted from some stuff I listed up last week. If you bought something from it thanks because everything that sold paid for it.

Now Michael had no idea what model this was and the only thing I could tell is that it was probably a mid 80's mid/upper range model. Being the matching fork(S/N 2501) has a SLX rifled steerer tube and semi sloping fork crown with Campy dropouts. The frame has the serial number 2501 stamped on the Cinelli BB, Panto'd cyclist on the brake bridge(TSD era), Portacatena Campy rear dropouts, dual water bosses, front derailleur braze on mount. The frame I don't believe is SLX being there is no rifling at the bottom of the seat tube. If anyone knows what model it is please chime in cause I'm dying to know.

To start out with it was in desperate need of some light frame work. The top tube cable guides all needed to be replaced as they were pretty corroded and one actually had had the loop section completely gone from corrosion. I knew of the rough condition so we settled for a pretty good price. So the old guides came off with assistance of my torch and some silver and new guides from John Thompson who lives just minutes from me and is always a big help when it comes to stuff like this.

So looking even uglier then when I got it with paint missing and flux residue left on it. I also got a little adventurist with a wire wheel to see what was under the unoriginal paint. I discovered it had chromed rear stays but were sanded for the paint job it was currently wearing when I got it. It was like a slightly metallic Barney Purple paint job. So I found a local guy who did powder coating and could do every imaginable color I could of wanted and had did frames before not to mention he rides but in the form of single speed mountain bikes.

The last picture shows off the best view of the paint. It's a candy red with a silver metallic base coat powder coat with a clearcoat. The decals are on the way from Cyclomondo which are yellow with a black outline. All of the pantographing on the seat stay caps and the fork crown will be filled in with yellow. I'm still debating if going with yellow cable housing will push it over the edge and require me to finish it off with a yellow saddle and bar tape or if it'll look half finished if I just leave it. Right now I have a black Brooks Team Pro saddle, black leather Concor to choice from. The rest of the components are 8spd Campy brifters, 8spd Record FD and 8spd Veloce RD and the brand new Centaur cranks. The wheels are 8spd Record hubs laced up to Mavic SUP rims. I have a beat up Campy Record seat post that's needs a lot of work but fits.

The paint isn't super bright but that last picture really shows off the candy and metallic in it. It's no perfect paint job but I'm still happy. The frame had body work that was done underneath the previous paint job...body filler as there's pitting on the top tube around the guides. I'm not a super picky person as it's going to be ridden and no show queen or just some Sunday cruiser.

The STI adapters were done seperately as I wasn't sure what I wanted to run for shifters. I've got both 8spd brifters or Syncro II shifters to choice from but I didn't like how the adapters stuck out against the color of the frame so I had those painted to match. I was actually debating when I was brazing on the guides to remove the shifter bosses and just put STI barrel adjuster braze ons. I decided against it and kept it original just incase I wanted to go retro and use DT shifters.

Rifled steer is not unique to SLX, most decent columbus tubesets had rifled steerer at least since the early 70's.

The frame weighs 1875g and the fork is 650g so I'm guessing it's SL going by the 80's Columbus tubing on the CR site. It says 1925g but then again my frame is small fry at 52ST and 53TT c-c. Looking through a TSD Ciocc brochure I had I didn't see anything in there that matched up or the other two TSD Ciocc brochures I found. The fork crown throws off anything I find that looks familiar and that it's not a replacement fork unless they stamp replacement forks the same frame it's going with. I dunno I'm still wet behind the ears to this vintage stuff.

+1, my 1974 Colnago Super has a rifled steer tube, and is not an SLX frame obviously

It looks a lot like the S.L. Special because the rear triangle was completely chromed, same seat lug, FD braze on, but then the fork crown isn't the same and wasn't this catalog before TSD? The sloping crown fork is used on other models in that same catalog compared to not a single model in the newer TSD catalog.

You have a vary unique lug on the DT HT. It looks like a four leaf clover cut out with a vary long point. If the ST takes a 27.2 post I would bet the frame is made out of SL. With the brake bridge panto rider a would guess on 88'. Mine has clover on BB and heart cut outs on the lugs.

All of the lugs have long points with rounded tips. It also takes a 27.2 post.

too bad the chrome on the fork was toast :(

I'm so glad you're bring this frame back to life. That is one beautiful paint job.

Well bad news. I started assembling the frame this morning and noticed a few things with the paint. It had cracks that you couldn't feel with your finger nail but were extremely visible and it was flaking off on the dropouts very easily. I had spray bombed frames that the paint held up better. So I called the powdercoater up and told him the issues and I have to bring it back. The section up by the headtube, bottom bracket and dropouts are completely different looking from the other parts of the bike like you can see in the pictures. Some have a really nice metallic color and others barely have anything at all. The parts that did flaked did so right down to bare metal. I had the Sports Tourer powdercoated and even though the finish wasn't as nice it was tough. If I look at this the long way flakes or I notice more cracks then before. :(

Ouch! Did the coater blast the frame first?

Yeah cause he was the one that told me that just the rear section of the frame was chromed. I wasn't sure how much of it was chromed. Even on the dropouts where the paint flaked off it'd down to bare metal and not just sanded chrome. Their almost like stress cracks in the paint. I snapped a few pictures to show the carnage. I can't imagine how the paint would look once I started riding and flexing the frame. It would look cracked everywhere not to mention I can picture the paint flaking off in big chunks being washed away by my tears.

I mean youch! I just threaded in the cups and tighten them down to about 15lbs. Look at the difference from yesterday before anything was even installed. Lets just say our lights in the dining room where I took the pictures aren't the brightest so I didn't catch it then that it has cracks already. He mentioned he puts a clearcoat over all candies caught their not as tough as a non candy but this is crazy how fragile it is. The whole thing will have to be blasted and resprayed again. Maybe I'll not get a candy if it'll be like this.

That would seem to be entirely the fault of the powder coater. He should be able to figure out what he did wrong and correct it.

Are the drilled and tapped holes on the Driveside Dropout meant for Campy Portacatena?

Bummer about the finish...just an observation, you might want to face the BB shell before you install the BB.

Took it back and he was baffled. He was totally helpful and was redoing it. The paint was chipping off with just your fingernail. The fork was fine but the frame definitely had something wrong with it he said but it'll all get stripped down because I didn't care for how the edges really thinned out and you could see the base color and any inperfection stuck out more. So he said since it all has to get stripped down I could go with another color if if I wanted. So now she's getting a completely different color.

As for the dropout...yup it's for a Portacatena setup but since I'm running 8spd that's a no go. Not to mention finding the setup is like finding hen's teeth and I can just imagine the price.

burning question: What color did you go with?

It's a toss up between these three colors. It won't get stripped until Monday so I have a few days to sit on it. But it's between these two.

Well I certainly dig that Ciocc frame. Too bad about the apparent goof-up in the powder coating, but you'll get it straightened out. Bet it'll be a stuner too.

I like the 'robins egg blue'. Just seems more suited for an 80's Italian frame.

I'm thinking of the robin's egg blue also. To be honest after seeing the red it was a bit loud for my style. It'll go good with my seafoam 650c race bike.

Well I got the frame back this evening and it looks great and I'm a lot happier with the color now. I never had a red bike bike but even when I had the chance to get it repainted I went with something a little more easier on the eye. Here she is in her brand new color! Time to start putting it together! I was going to pick up some paint to fill in the panto on the seat stay cap, the inside of club cutout on the bottom bracket and lower headlug. I'll hold off until I get my decals in the mail so I know what shade yellow I need.

Woah sweet I'll take you up on that deal definitely! Now if I go with yellow housing what else would need to be yellow or would I have to do the bar tape and saddle also or would it be overkill? I've got a black Brooks Team Pro already for it and would it looked mismatched with yellow tape and a black saddle or a black saddle and just yellow tape?

Also should I do skin walls or all black tires? I thought with the color it might go better and with the non painted aluminum components?

No dice on the keeping or redoing the shield logos.

Update! It's got a name! Got the decals today from Cyclomondo and it's about 90% done now. Just need to order some bar tape, cables and maybe find a matching 8spd Record rear derailleur to go with the front. It's got a Veloce rear derailleur right now but it works for the time being. I did a little polishing on the hubs, downtube sti cable stop adapters, levers(don't look too close at my drillium work...lol) and the stem is getting ditched for something else.

Great stuff. Did you get the engravings in the seat stays filled in? In the first pictures it doesn't look like it but in the last one i seems like you might have done that.

Well here she is completed. I found something this weekend at a bike swap to put the cherry on top. Usually I'm not a big fan of stem adapters but I wanted the stem plus it's still 1". Like new titanium Cinelli Grammo stem with matching Cinelli 1" to 1" threadless stem adapter. These don't turn up too often and when they do...way out of my price range for a stem. The pedals are just temporary but I kind of dig them. Finished installing the Brooks bar tape, Jagwire race cable set, Gatorskin 700x28 tires and a snazzy bottle cage to top it off. I took it outside for it's maiden voyage down the street and it felt pretty darn nice. The tires are really nice taking in the bumps with them being a little thicker then my normal 700x23 I normally run on my bikes. She tips the scale at just a little under 22 lbs.

How do the brifters work with those bars?

Suprisingly they work really good and you don't have to adjust your hands to drop down gears. Your thumb is already positioned underneath the bars when your riding on that section of the bars and you just press the shift lever like you were pressing down a key on a keyboard. I was curious with this when I was debating using the bars and running downtube shifters.
