Stumpy.

So, I'm out in San Jose this week for work. Long story short, I'd planned to bring a bike with me and leave it here as I'll be moving out here permanently in a few months, but the night before my flight after packing up my bike, I realized the box was 3" too large to check on the plane. Crap!

So, when I got here Wednesday night I got to looking on the Bay Area CL and came across a Stumpy with a crappy pic and a price of $120. it was in Santa Cruz. I wanted an older rigid MTB because one: the only one I have back in PA is attached to a xtracycle and two: i wanted something for some very light trail riding out west.

So I left work last night to make the 45 minute drive to Santa Cruz. It dawned on me as I was driving there that Santa Cruz is an ocean town. Crap, I wonder if it has rust?

I got there. The lady owner was a hippy straight out of Up In Smoke or some other west coast movie with hippies in it. I mean I'm in Santa Cruz so..

The bike was her fathers. He was the original owner. She told me it was in a garage right now but it had been kept outside.... We were a few blocks from the Pacific.

Well anyway, I got to checking it out. It looked all original. Maybe even the tires? It has surface rust all over, but from what I could tell nothing that a bath wont clean off. The bull moose bars won't ever be pretty again as some of the chrome is missing, but whatever. The best part was that the tires held air, it shifted great, the wheels were true, and it fit me!

She knocked $20 off the price simply because I showed up.

I was able to cram the thing into my rental car, which to my initial dismay turned out to be a Crown Vic. At that moment I was glad I didnt trade it for something else. The bike fit in the back seat without even taking the wheels off (which have no qrs).

So, anyhow, I took the bike to the Performance Bike across the street from my hotel last night, and today I road the rusty mess into work. it's too bad I have no tools with me. It's also too bad I didnt bring a brooks as the seat leaves a bit to be desired.

yeah it actually rides and shifts very nicely despite its looks!

the pics dont do it justice. the fork especially has a layer of rust. I bought the only rusty bike in California I think.

The good thing is you can have it repainted Red and stick DeRosa badges all over it and you'll fit right in.

Yo, keep that kind of language private!

I like the bike, though. Lugged mountain bike, that's the way to go.

You're misremembering. I convinced you to buy that for the Super Record, which you couldn't tell apart from Valentino. I told you I'd buy it from you if you had regrets. I'm still waiting.

Nice. You have another set of 650b wheels for this one?

Wait... since it's already a small wheel, what is the conversion on MTBs, 24" wheels? [enter winking icon here]

It's the stuff you put on your xtracycle.

Digging it, and it's not that rusty! I actually expected far worse when you said outside, pacific ocean. I can mail you a Brooks if you need. We can work it out later...what kind do you need?

I've got an 84 Stumpjumper sport- it's a smooth riding machine.

sweet... throw some slicks on there if you only ride in the city.you can really feel the cruiser heritage in early 80s mtbs :)

ish

Nice pick up, looks mostly original. Save those pedals, as they are worth a pretty penny.

The tires are not original. You don't need slicks if those tires are not dry rotted. Town and Country are "dual purpose" tires, and most people like them.

Good multi-purpose bikes.

Yours looks like fun.

We use ours constantly around town and at the cabin.

I was expected Tow-Mater rusty, that doesn't look so bad.

Hey so , now that I live in California I've been commuting on this thing a lot and I really like it. I'm about to pick up some new tires and probably a set of fenders. I like it enough I might even get it powdered and rebuild it.

Cn any speak to what size tires with fenders they've been able to fit? I'm hoping to do some 2.35" fat franks or big apples with fenders as well. There is plenty of space there but I'd love to hear from anyone who has a similar setup on a stumpy just to make sure. In fact I'd love to see any pics of your stumpys you have!

Cool bike you have there.

It should make one heckuva errand runner for you.

Here are a few pics of my son's 1983 Stumpjumper Sport.

When we found it, it had the original nubs on the tires.

I gave this one to my oldest and his little brother received a Bridgestone MB-1 as holiday gifts.

Unfortunately, they have both outgrown these vintage mtbs.

Holiday76's bike is a carbon-copy of my first MTB, even the color and size. They made a lot of these.

I got taken out by a drunk hit-'n-runner in L.A. riding at night, but the bike was repaired and used for many more years.

The geometry reminded me of a dirt bike, so I added a dual-clamp stem, a "superbike bend" handlebar from a motorcycle, and a layback alloy post.

The bike's weight and the long chainstays made climbing on steep dirt a near back-breaking proposition, but it was, as frantik mentioned, like a good cruiser.

Gomango, your son's bike looks entirely original, but mine had I think Suntour shifters and Stumpjumper tires.
Good find.

we're twins!

a few years ago i ventured to Santa Cruz from the east bay to purchase a stumpjumper from a CO-ED who had it listed on CL too.

i've subsequently stripped most of the parts and turned it into a singlespeed. had it powdercoated and swapped in some 1 1/4 slicks. it was well used and had the original wheels. it is now in Columbus Ohio and i only ride it when i return to visit my two adorable sisters. i miss it so much that i think when i return to visit this year i'll have it shipped back here (Walnut Creek) so i can ride it more often.

i might even play around with the build a little and see if i like it with 700c wheels, and old road fork off a trek and a rear coaster brake hub. should at least look clean.

as I said in the other thread, its the same basically.

that said I DO like the bike a lot. Soon it will get torn apart and powdercoated. I'm thinking yellow. I'll get the frame, fenders, and maybe a rear rack all powdered.

I imagine it rides like a Raleigh DL-1.
