I was finishing a 20+ ride last week on my GF MTB, and coming down a long road weaving back and forth (wide road, entrance to resort, no traffic), when my right peddle caught the asphalt, launched the seat into my butt. I swear, I thought I was going to pass out. Haven't felt that much pain in a long time. If I hadn't been locked in the SPD peddles, I probably would have left the bike.

Now it's killing me to even sit, cough, blow my nose, sneeze. Though I can bike, because the sore area is near the top of the buttocks, and sitting in my saddle doesn't really touch it.

I am wondering if I should go to the Dr. Feel it may be fractured, but what can you even do for a fractured tail bone?

Might just be one of those things that has to just heal.

Anyone else ever do this, or am I "special"

I did get a LOT of good riding in at Williamsburg, VA last week.

All kidding aside go to the doctor to see if , or how bad, you are injured beyond a simple bruise and sore tissue.

Yeah, maybe it's a good idea to get medical
attention for that; x-rays and what not.

"Anyone else ever do this, or am I "special" "

Can't say that this has ever happened to me before.
It seems you were taking a fast right turn with the
right pedal in the 6 o'clock position, is this what
happened? I try to remember to have the pedal in
the same direction I'm turning at 12 o'clock or at
least in the 9 or 3 o'clock position. Or maybe you
were pedaling while leaning deep into a turn?

Yeah, peddling in the turn...I should know better. I'm going to give it one week (Tuesday) and if it's not better, off to the Dr. I go.

Might be a fractured tailbone. Nothing you can do about that though, other than put up with the pain.

My son fell out of a tree and broke his coccyx bone. So, yeah, you can break it. Seen it happen.

I lost a LOT of weight and now my coccyx extends out further than ever - it hurts to sit for long periods of time, especially on a plane (30 minutes and I am DYING)

It is a painful thing to live with...but go see the doc and get some x-rays - he might be able to get you a donut to sit on to help alleviate the pressure

Not much. My wife broke hers and all they could do for her is tell her to rest and give her pain meds. Still, I would recommend seeing a doctor to make sure you don't have something else going on.

Once while mountain biking I messed up a bunnyhop, pranged the back wheel on the obstacle and it bounced pretty hard; I ended up taking a saddle to the sack. That was no fun.

Not really the same thing, but I thought the story might amuse you enough to take your mind off your sore bum.

Well you could get some pain meds possibly-winkwink- but be happy even if it is broken. It could have been worse. You could have been probed by your saddle:roflmao:

edit: Yes a little juvenile but hey its 3:00am :p Oh and could have been much worse if it caught the boys and did some damage there:eek:

Like others have said, there's not much you can do but wait for it to heal. I did it when I was a freshman in college, running down some wet concrete stairs - my feet went out from under me and I landed hard on a stair nosing. A friend of mine broke hers while delivering her second child, and had to spend a week in bed, and even after that it was painful for her to get around for some time.

I bruised my tailbone in a rollerblading incident, entire body weight crashed on my butt... It took 3 YEARS before I could sit more than 20 minutes at a time. When its really cold and I've been outside for an hour or so, my tailbone STILL hurts. That was 20 years ago.

There isn't much to be done about a broken tailbone, but seeing a doctor may be prudent to make sure that's all you injured.

I think I broke my tailbone as a kid. I was riding my brother's BMX bike with a solid plastic saddle. I think it hurt for a month.

Like the bruised ribs I am dealing with from a fall on Sunday - there isn't much you can do but see the doc and if needed get some pain meds.

"I think I broke my A$$ !!!"

I doubt you broke it... It's probably just cracked!!

Sorry, I had to state the obvious! Hope you feel better soon.

I've done this.... :o

It hurt so bad that I rode home standing on the pedals. Never went down that hill that fast again.

Your coccyx (or 'tailbone') is part of your spine. All thats left of our "tail"

Is that what hurts so much?

I was working on a bike at 1am two weeks ago, and forgot to screw one pedal in all the way for some stinkin reason. Next day I go to try the bike out and go ride around a dirt road a bit. Then I stand up and jump on the pedals, WHAM!!!! Holy WTF?! There's the seat trying to assinate the boys and my a$$, and my pedal laying on the ground. I was certainly surprised at the speed it happened and the pain involved. Although mine was fine the next day. Luckily so was my crank arm and pedal :)
Hope your rear isn't broken dude, and feels better sooner than later!

Well, it's been two weeks now and it's feeling much better. Still biking. Made my 400 miles for the month! Luckily in the saddle of my Madone, the sore part is not on the seat. Love my ISM Adamo seat!!!
