So I just purchased a mag trainer for my winter riding. I haven't ridden in over 2 weeks (illness) and decided to give the trainer a first ride. I wasn't sure what to think about the rides since I enjoy my Pittsburgh riding. Overall it was a pretty good success. Rode for about 45 minutes at a good clip. Just wondering how anyone else does with their trainers.

I would like to start this as a "What was your Trainer ride like today." Let's hear what you all think.

Haven't ridden today, but gave my new trainer (Kurt Kinetic) a spin yesterday morning instead of going on the group ride (still treading snot in a sea of mucus). Used a Sufferfest video I downloaded ("The Hunted"). A self-administered total butt kicking.

I do pretty good on exercise machines, can zone out and just go. But using the video was far more effective than I would be just spinning, and the Sufferfest series are only $11.95 each (or some discounted price if you purchase all 8). I was very satisfied with the intensity of the workout - two towels worth. Not nearly as fun as the group ride would have been, but it was a very intense hour.

I like the sufferfest vids because they base the level of effort on your perceived effort on a scale one to ten. You don't spend much time below 7 after warmup. But no powermeter, heart rate monitor, cadence meter, etc required. I use my speedometer to gage effort a bit, coupled with a quick six-second count to get approximate cadence when you need to spin fast per the "coach." Shortly going to finish another couple of chores and then climb aboard again.

Well I definitely like the idea of low budget (no meters or monitors) so this seems like a pretty good idea. Any others having success with such videos. If you have any favorites please, do tell.

My trainer rides are great, it is how I wake up before work. I also have some spinervals videos I can do if I want a serious workout. They really whoop me

I can do 3hrs outside in any weather +40 To -40 no problem, but I can't do 30 minutes inside.
It's like a slow painful torture that never ends, and 5 minutes seems like an hour!

As we speak one of my MTB's is sitting on an awesome Kurt Kenetic mag trainer,
but I dread using it.
Maybe it is a good thing since I prefer the -25C ride outside to the +25C ride inside.

When I have used a trainer, I do intervals.

10 minutes warm up, decent spin.

1 minute full out biggest gear

3 minutes rest

1 minute full out biggest gear

3 minutes rest

Repeat then use the last 5 mintues for a cool down ( total of 45 minutes).....I do full out effort so at times, the 3 minutes rest may turn to 4. I use a fan pointed head on to keep me a little cool. I sweat like a dog. I know someone will say "3 minutes is too long", if you think so, you aren't pushing hard enough..:D

Competing with myself. I forget the numbers but lets say as an example I can do 70 revolutions in one minute all out in the 53/12, on the next interval I will try to top it by one. :winter:

I've been using a Cycleops fluid trainer for about a month now.I like it! I use the trainer twice a week for 30 mins to augment my other regular rides. I do 5 mins warmup,15 mins at my Max, and 5 mins cool down. The biggest difference I have noticd is that the lack of coasting on a trainer is improving my "regular" rides.
The trainer also allows me to ride on icy days. Good fun!

I like to ride outside, period. But that might change when it snows.... :) or I will get studded tires. This is why I plan on commuting to work very soon. Easy way to get 22 miles in a day.

Looked at trainers but havent been able to offered it yet

As luck would have it, our local "freebie" ads just listed a "Ironman Crossover Spin Bike" as free to whomever can come get it. Its located a mile from my home so I jumped on it. I have the Cycleops Fluid trainer but thought it might be fun to try a true spin bike for a few sessions - if it doesnt work out I can "pass it on" :)
