I'm looking to buy my son a new bike for Christmas. He currently has a 2000 Free Agent HellCat that I believe is more of a jump bike. I should say he is about 175lbs 6'1". He spends a lot of time at the local skate parks and doesn't do any flatland. He and his friends are also building a dirt jump "park". He is going to need a bike that can hold up to his size, yet be light enough to manage at the skate park for grinding and riding the bowl, and small vert there. He has mentioned a Fly Barcelona. Myself, I was thinking along the lines of a Specialized Fuse III or possibly a new leftover 03 Fuse IV. I know he does a lot of grinding and would benefit from lefthand drive. I am big fan of Specialized mountain bikes and have two Rockhoppers and an Enduro, so my comfort level is higher with them. Any opinions or other options would be appreciated.

Well, the Specialized Fuse series are pretty good bikes; in fact, I'd take them over most completes. The only real competitor (with the Fuse III), in my opinion at least, would be the higher grade Fit complete (the name of which eludes me).

Thanks for the input. We had a look at the Fuse III and he liked it. I had my eye on a "new" 03 415 Pro they had left over. I may be able to get it for not much more than the 05 or 04 Fuse III. Spec-wise and for his style, which one would be better?

The Fuse, definitely. It's the frame that all the pros on the team ride.
