Classic & Vintage - Early 90's Scott MTB

Well I picked up an what I think is an early 90's Scott Montana, Exage 500 Der's Cromolly frame made in Taiwan, designed in Sun Valley :) . I like the bike its my first since the 70's so.... Anyway I'm learning a lot working on it. But I have a question anyone have an idea as to its probable MSRP? I'm thinking it was probably not to expensive say $300 or so and its just curiosity but hey that killed the cat not me.

The Montana with Shimano 500LX is listed in both the 1990 and 1991 catalogues. MSL was $499.00 US.

What are you doing to it? I ride a 90's chromoly, just the original headset now.

Replaced everything with fresh goodies.

If you have the original loose ball bb, you might inspect the bearings, races. I might have saved mine if I'd checked it lastyear when I bought it.

My 90 Ritch frame is @ 22 lb, 7 spd, overbuilt (strength components).

I was looking to start riding a bike again and found the Scott for $24 (before shipping) and I'm using it to learn how to repair etc. But as to riding its just around town for a little exercise and to get from hear to there.

24$??? That's the price of a cartridge bb. :D

I meant are you replacing\ upgrading the components.

I like old frames but new hardware. Alloys are better, brake designs too.

Some skinny slick\ semi slick tires will help the street ride. And keeping the weight off the frame ( I have no doo-dads) makes the bike responsive.

Hope you got an 8-spd cluster. My bike came with a 7 on a very nice Mavik rim so I've been staying @ 7 until I can't repair the wheel anymore.

It was difficult to find any quality 7spd index shifters...all plastic shell..yech.

If the frame is more to horizontal toptube design, the bikes run more to xc\road position \seat up -bars down areodynamic.

Riser bars are also a way of adapting position\ fit.

V-brakes (If it doesn't have) are a nice design, way easier to get a good clamp on the rim.

My 'way' to do up a ride is find a stinky old chromoly bike\ frame and buy a newer alu scrap bike and swap out the components -everthing that is an upgrade.

I'll seach out a used $50 bike for a wheel to rebuild, and get a set of v-brakes and long pull levers for free. (v's use a different lever than cantilever brakes.)

I just like old steel frames..but ya, check bearings, pack grease.

hubs\ bb (if original loose ball) \ headset. Look @ the races for pitting.

Recycle bicycles I say.
