Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - coastie on the cheap

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a 74' Fuji Special Tourer which I am stripping to make into a coastie, I have looked around and for the most part have found that the wheel sets are pricey, coasties.com make some seriously awesome deep v rims, however for this project they are seriously expensive. I found a store called Tree Fort bikes who carry a 700c rear coaster set for $40 (shimano bearings and DC19 rims...I think) and the front rim and hub for a similar price. To complete I need a chain and the mounting bracket for the coaster brake. Any suggestions on maybe cheaper parts of equal quality? I am open to anything, thanks!

I kinda think that this is a bad idea...

You'll find naysayers here, but the classic and vintage subforum would probably have some ideas.

Those wheels aren't the best, but I'm sure they will work just fine. You aren't going to find anything significantly cheaper without going used.
I would enquire about the O.L.D. & chainline before buying. You may need to add some spacers, redish the wheel slighlty and/or make some adjustments to the front part of the drive train, but it should't be too difficult to get it to work.

heh I have that wheelset actually, black rim, chrome hub/stainless spokes.. OLD should be 120, if your really getting the same wheels, the rear comes with the complete shimano coaster brake kit.. so you'll have your bracket sprocket etc. Honestly, once I knew my chain line was right and had it tensioned just how I wanted I realized the bikes original chain (shortened of course) was actually ideal, and my chain line is near perfect on the outside position on what was a double crankset. Hope this helps.

OP, if you haven't ordered them yet, they show backorder at Tree Fort Bikes. Also, you'll pay for shipping, unless the order is over $125.
