I raced the Gravel Grovel (http://gravelgrovel.com/) yesterday. It's a 60-mile gravel and off-road race in southern Indiana.

Due to a wrong turn (by nearly the whole group) right at the beginning, we had an extra four miles and two climbs.

Most riders seemed to be riding either 'cross bikes or mountain bikes, but I don't have either of those. I rode my LHT. I removed the fenders and put 700x47 tires on it. It behaved wonderfully on the gravel. It wasn't the ideal bike for the off-road section though.

It was painful, but fun. My goal was to finish within 6h:30m. I finished in 6h:13m, which makes me quite happy., :thumb: That way I didn't miss the award ceremony or the food.

Here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq_3keqvjd4) someone took of last years event. It looks very similar to my experience.

Oh dear! You chose a 60 mile off-road race for your very first race?!!

:thumb:

That is quite the impressive feat!

Well, yes. It's more about endurance than all out speed. I'll never be that fast, but I can keep pedaling for a long time. :)

They still haven't posted official results, but I know I was near the end, but not AT the end. It was totally about meeting my goal which I did.

Thanks!

That's great, good job.

You know, those things can be addictive... You're going to be looking for the next one before too long, I'll bet.

dc,

I have enjoyed this thread, How did you place? I'm central Illinois and have never ridden in anything considered a race. I'm 62 and a clyde, this race look very interesting on Youtube. I wonder if i could complete it on my single speed Haro Steel?
