Just doing a survey (personal) of the mtb market here.

DJ,dh and fr bikes are freeride.
All mountain are the mid range like the giant ac's, enduros etc.
xc is everything else

If you built a xc bike to huck, its still a xc bike. If you have an ac that is burlym it is still a trail bike. If you have a bighit with 3 rings and an air shock it is still fr.

I have one of each, plus!

I considered my SS, that has a flat bar and XC geometry as my XC bike.
I then have my Enduro SX.
I have my Iron Horse Sinsister DJ

I have my K2 Brass Monkey that will shortly become my SS DJ. I didn't vote again since it's still in pieces.

And then my Intense, but I'm not sure which frame to get. Again, I didn't vote a 2nd time.

Yeah, I knew a few of us would be tough to vote for. I have 2 fr bikes and 1 all mountain.

I would wait on the intense until you know about CO...that will make the decision easier.

my mtn. bike is a diamond back sorento frame. the complete bike was less then 300 bucks. then I replaced most of the parts.

4 inch DJ 2 forks, sun rims, fsa cranks. etc.

I pedal it around in the woods, cross country style I guess.

my bmx bike is a macneil heaton. four pegs, front brakes and a gyro. frame could be anything really, it's a bike. I ride it.

:)

You still ride bmx often?

4 pegs I thought that was bmx blasphemy like buying a non-rootbeer colour v10

You forgot one form of Mountain Bike---- Full XC, aggressively ridden Tandem.

Even classing mine as XC, It is set up with complete Downhill specific parts on it. So perhaps that should be modified to B&^^>y heavy Tandem that Flies on the flat,Has never been passed on the downhill, but needs a tow uphill.

Maelstrom

No I didn't forget anything. Did you read my post. If you have a xc bike that is setup for dh it is still a xc bike. I was pretty specific.

Tandem doesn't count, I bet tandem dh only account for .1% of the entire market.

i've had four pegs for about 20 years. I'm too old to care what the little kids think. ;)

I don't ride anything too often anymore. Kinda burnt out and my body really hurts, most of the time.

:) I'm pretty sure if one is capable of using both sides then 4 pegs is permitted. (don't ride 'em myself, so take that with a grain of salt....)

XC here. I love my Attitude! (sound funny)

Voted XC as it is built with an xc drive train, but i use it more for Djing and freeride... (not a good idea i know) £200 till i get a proper bike to do a proper job on though!

It was just a joke. I personally would run for pegs, if I had a bmx :)

PNJ,

With how long you have been ripping, I can totally understand burnout. I just hope to still be riding in 20 years as well.

Cheers

:D I don't know about ripping but I started riding a bike in 1977. I was seven years old, the bike was a schwinn jr. sting ray. in 1980 or so I found a BMX PLUS! magazine and got a bmx seat, stem and bars for my bike. I got a Redline frame in, around 1982 or so. I raced for a few years, then in 1984, FREESTYLIN' the magazine came out. I had been doing tricks like bunnyhops and curb endos for awhile at that point in time.

the track went under and it cost $$ to race anyways so freestyle was better for me. I did flatland and rode ramps and then in the late 80's, freestyle pretty much died. the bike manufactures jumped over to mountain biking (haro, GT, redline, mongoose all started in bmx).

some of us kept riding. street riding started to get popular as did dirt jumping. people had been riding 'street' and dirt jumping well before then....

I found some other kids in the area (oregon, canada, washington and northern california) and we traveled all around, riding with each other. I had a friend that had been riding for about the same amount of time as I had been and he made videos. we did the same thing kids do today, rode around and found stuff to ride on and got it on film.

I rode bmx(stunt riding, now called street/ramp/dirt/flatland) until 1999 when I stopped completely. I was sore and just burned out. I got a mountain bike in 2002 or so but the bmx bug came back. no matter how much time I spend on a mountain bike, it still feels funny. :)

now I ride when I want, and have as much fun doing it as when I was 14 or so. no presure, just pedaling....

Its funny as I ride longer my bike keeps getting smaller. Not entirely sure why (well i know partially) I never felt confident or comfortable on a xc bike sized bike, always felt worng.

The pressure is half the reason I don't race or want to. I want to be able to hop on when I want and not worry. Just play. :)

Maelstrom,

You will find that the XC market is by far the largest. As cool as DH, FR, DJ might be, it is restricted to the few and the brave who have the guts and skill to do that type of riding. The majority will have to stop at XC, and even there, real technical single track is out of reach for many.

This fits the Trek market analysis you provided in the link about the Session 77 reviews at Whistler.

Yep, I realize. I am doing this survey 2 fold. Just something I am personally curious about. Sometimes the diversity of this forum is claimed to be very skewed to dh/fr. Just seeing how that pans out. also just seeing if this online community is similar to the numbers spouted by Cam in that article.

XC bike, wanting to get a bike for some freeriding, probably no downhill in the immediate future.

Yep. There are plenty of people who think the forum is almost all DH/FR but i think this survery may change some minds. Well done Mael!

I have a XC bike, cannondale super v 500. Full xt and replaced the headshock.

I'm starting to get more into jumps and a kind of dh mixed with XC so my next bike is probably going to be an "all-mountain" bike.

I am hoping. We are likely the loudest, yes, but the majority, I didn't think so.

Do you ever wonder if that's a trade off ? I live in a great riding area with miles and miles of trails and I can pretty much ride year round. You live in what could be the best riding in the world. If you didn't take some time off you just might O.D. on killer riding. My only advice is fly south for the winter. :D

But some of us are skiers, so winter provides a whole new set of toys to play with. Of course, Mael lives in the ski paradise, while I am in Toronto - anything but ski paradise.

But I get at least 35-40 days of skiing a year (mostly in Quebec) and in the West.

Hey hey, a poll where you can chose more then one. About time. I had to check all the boxes. Got My dh rig, my xc rig and my fun rig. I use all of them, just depends on what mood I am in lol. I use to only own one but I am very picky about setup and I got tired of adjusting one bike for each situation which changes from day 2 day.

... ;) YEah that is the tradeoff. I am likely better off for having time off. I tend to bike 3 to 5 days a week either dh or xc or even park now. year round might kill me :)

i love everything about it. 5" travel or 7", and superlight for the big bike that it is, i wouldnt trade it for any other 7" bike.
