Just ordered a motobecane CX from bd. It's at the low end of the component spectrum since it's one of the cheaper one. So I was wondering, would it be a wise move to substitute the stock wheels for an Open Pro (mavic) for the rear and a Velocity (heavy & solid w/dura ace hub) which I use for the front?

In other words can I use road bike wheels with wide (35) CX tires?

Can't tell you all how I am looking forward to riding that thing!

Yes.

It is common practice to use a 700x32 size tire on a Mavic Open Pro. Using a 700x35 is too wide for the rim, IMO.

Mavic’s website states that 28mm is the widest tire recommended on an Open Pro rim.

If a 700x35 is the right size for your needs, find a wider rim: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shimano-Tiagra-32-Hole-Mavic-A319-Rims-Wheelset-Wheels-Road-Cyclocross-29er-/250895300894?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a6a86791e or http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bicycle-700x23-Wheel-Set-Road-Bike-VELOCITY-A23-BLACK-/280732820458?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item415cfae3ea

I saw that. But their website also says 103 lbs is the max air pressure for a 32mm tire. Interesting.

It's not a big deal to run a 35mm tire on a road rim. People have used Open Pros for 29er mountain bikes with much fatter tires.

I've used 700x35 tires with Open Pros and had zero problems. It seems to me that 103 psi is more pressure than you'd ever want in a 700x32 tire anyway, regardless of the rim. I'm guessing, though, that your main surprise is that they'd even give a maximum pressure for a tire that's outside their recommended size range. If you ask me, that size recommendation is very conservative.

FWIW, my 2008 Kona Jake came stock with 700x35 tires on Alex AT-450 rims, which are several millimeters narrower than Open Pros. That combination has never given me any trouble either.

I think wider rims give the tire a nicer profile, but Open pros work just fine with 35mm+ tires.

I've run 35 and 38mm on Aksiums which I believe has the same inside rim width as an Open Pro. No issues at all.
