Ok, this question have probable been up before but here we go again.
Is it possible to use a 9-speed rear derailleur with 7-speed index shifters?
All Shimano, ordinary flat bar shifters, mountainbike stuff.

How come then that Shimano says explicit "9 speed, works with 7 and 8 also" on some of their derailleurs but not on others? Is this something to worry about or not?
I am thinking about buying a Shimano RD M-510 or a Shimano RD M-750.

I am thinking about buying a Shimano RD M-510 or a Shimano RD M-750.Maybe they just neglected to state the obvious. They are functionally identical.Any Sram non ESP type is also shimano compatible and sram says they work with 7,8 or9 speed.
