I've been experiencing heart palpitations and saw my doctor about them. They are likely benign PVCs - premature ventricular contractions. They might possibly be caused by my taking Singulair for shortness of breath due to allergies. I had a heart ultrasound which was entirely normal and now my doctor will be having me wear a Holter monitor to record my hearts electrical activity over a 24 hour period, to help them understand better what might be causing these palpitations. I've been experiencing PVCs off and on for probably the better part of 20 years although they seem to have been far more frequent the last few months, which also coincides somewhat with being on Singulair. My doc has me stopped on Singulair for the next two weeks to see if there's any change. I was told that while I wear the monitor I should go about my daily routine which will include my 23 mile round trip bike commute. My doc especially wants to see what happens when I exercise since benign PVCs typically subside under physical activity. The person at the clinic where they fit you for the monitor said that excessive sweating can cause leads to come off where they stick them on your skin. I'm thinking I can dial back the intensity of my commute somewhat seeing as how typically I do work up a pretty good sweat even with it being cold out. Any thoughts? Has anyone else gone through this or something similar?

Yeah, but I'm only 42... are you saying I'm old? In all seriousness though, PVCs occur in roughly more than 50% of men surveyed and can happen to people in their 20s or 30s, not necessarily just old fogies like me.

Wear a full zip jersey and unzip it. Should help a bit. Of course if yuo are in hte wrong part of the country they may think you are crazy.

Unless you sweat like a draft horse, mid summer, shouldn't be a problem.
I wore one for a week in my shop during a spell of 90 deg days and the lead patches never came off.
My skin did when they removed the leads!

Not while riding, however a few months ago I had to wear one for a normal company medical check. The simple act of sleeping with one on was a problem for me. I was worried I'd pull off on of the leads. Good luck.

No saying these medical issues are a more common topic amongst
the older population, gathered there ,
I don't know a holter from a holstein..

the rest of the threads seem to be , just about bike parts.

Thanks for the info guys. It sounds like I'll probably be okay riding with it. I know my doc wanted to be sure that I had that exercise recorded on there to see what happens to the palpitations when I'm really exerting myself. Anyway, thanks again for the input. Always nice to read that you're not the only one to go through something like this.

I had to wear one several years back (just for the record, I'm in my 20's and was in my teens when I wore it). I didn't bike, but I did go on a hike in the middle of summer. The biggest issue was not the leads coming undone, but getting washed up afterwards. At any rate, I would recommend dropping down a notch in intensity like you mentioned, and everything should be great (especially since it is nearly December). Good luck on getting the PVC sorted out!

I wore one many years ago when occasional palpitations scared me into thinking I may have had a serious heart condition. I not only rode while wearing it, but I made sure to ride HARD, thinking if there was a problem it would be more likely show up on the recording. I had zero problems with the leads coming loose, and my results came up normal. Best wishes to you, and pedal on!

Same for me. I rarely wear jerseys anyway (too much like putting on pads to play football with your kids in the park). When I wore the monitor, I just pulled a T shirt over it.
