Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - tires

So i like to ride brakeless and skid sometimes, but i just cant justify how fast you go through tires when you skid and i dont want to be buying new tires 2 or 3 times a year. i think buying tires once a year would be fine though. i am thinking about buying thickslicks cuz i hear they are bomb proof and really sticky. and they have a great price tag. I was just wondering if anyone thinks the thickslicks would last as long as say continental hardshells or schwalbe duranos or any other high end tire that is real durable.i do not mind the weight of the thickslicks either. thanks guys

If you skid a lot and ride brakeless no tire will safely last you a year esp. if you have year-round riding weather. Just go for what's cheaper to replace. I had thickslicks and rode with a brake but skidded sometimes and I wore one down pretty low in about 4-5 months.

okay. thats kind of a bummer. i normally ride with a brake cuz i dont wanna blow through tires. but it really is different riding without brakes. guess i will just keep buying whatever the LBS has to offer or is in the sale bin.

This is ridiculous to me. I ride brakeless and my Paselas are nearly three years old.

Just because you have no brakes doesn't automatically mean you need to be skidding around like a damn fool.

It isnt worth it to cheap out on tires considering they are your connection to the ground and they do affect your ride. As Scrod said, don't skid, and get some decent tires at least.

I don't get a year out of rear tires on my geared road bike. Even if I removed my rear brake I don't think they'd go a year.

So my rear wheel is a clincher and my front is a tubular. I love the tire on my front (Vittoria Rally 23 (http://www.probikekit.com/us/tyres-tubes/tubular-bicycle-types/vittoria-rally-tubular-road-tyre.html)) and want a rear clincher version to match. The tire I impulsed grabbed with my store credit is a Vittoria Rubino in yellow and it doesn't look as good as the natural gum side wall that the front has.

So here is my question-

Is there a set of natural gum colored tires that match and come in both a tubular and clincher type?

Here is the bike as it sits tonight; the Campagnolo Pista cranks and a new chain go on in the morning.

The tires I've looked at that don't match exactly but have a bit of that yellow side wall I'd like to carry over are the following:

i think it is fun to skid, but dont do it often at all cuz i dont want to go through tires. i have had some vittorias on my bike for about a year now and can still ride on them but they are becoming fairly worn down. i know skidding is not necessary if you know what you are doing and are aware of whats around you and everything, but sometimes its fun to be able to skid and if i had the money and did not care about my tires i would do it more often. but hey, cant have everything.

When you say "match", what do you mean exactly? Veloflex pave is going to be pretty close to a Rally. Master and Record are close too.

You skid on your geared bike?

Sometimes I do, but I try not to. Just using that as an anecdote about expecting a year's use out of tires. My tubulars last a couple to three years usually, but they're special occasion tires.

BTW, Performance Forte Strada 25mm = worst tires for skidding.

I have 8 skid patches, run brakeless, and already wore through the rubber on one part of my thickslick. I've had them for less than 2 months. I really didn't think I skidded that much.

I plan on getting a Conti Hardshell for my front and move that slick to the back.

The gum-wall has a look on it's own, but doesn't work with the color scheme of your frame. The yellow tire in the rear works better for me...

it depends on the tire. I wore down my front GP4000 in under a year when I was getting ~200 miles a week and riding my geared bike almost exclusively. Other tires like Paselas and Gatorskins aren't so soft and sticky so they just last

I can't speak for other sqrls, but when a dude is skid-happy, he LOSES points in my eyes. Makes him look like a showoff jackass.
