Foo - December 2011 Foo Photo Contest - here are the winners!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Theme for December is Portrait, chosen by Macfred.

A portrait is a photograph of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.

Rules:
Theme: Portrait
- You must be the photographer
- One photo per person
- Try to make the photo a recent one

Good luck everyone!

(back story: This is my youngest brother. His twin decided to call all the other siblings and a few friends, and invites us all to meet for a long weekend at my youngest brother's house....and THEN tells him when we'll all be there! This shot was taken after 6 of us arrived, and we asked him how he REALLY felt about seeing us! - we came to his house in VA from NY, WV, FL, CA, GA & VT)

Good portrait photo :) ... must be nice to have access to backgrounds like that for your photos. I'm just getting into photography and am still using coloured cardboard for my backgrounds.

Did you go to a studio to use their backgrounds, or do you have that at home?

And what are you using for a camera?

I am not going to go into a lot of detail about the photo, since it is a "contest". Will answer in more detail in Jan.

Unfortunately, my home does not have room for a studio, so I have a portable studio. Camera was a Nikon D90 with Tamron 17-50 f2.8. Off-camera lighting (speedlights/umbrellas) with radio triggers.

this is not for the contest because its a few years old, but it's one of the best portraits I've ever taken. If it were recent I'd make it my submission.

Very interesting bokeh (the out of focus area for those that need to know), was it shot with a DC lens or something like a lensbaby?

I hate to give away my secrets. ;) That would be one way to do it.

sorry just kidding. select the subject, then invert the selection, then apply guassian blur to whatever degree you like. can really pop the subject from the background in a cool way.

99 ways to skin the cat.

I'm such an old skool guy I always thinks about doing it through the lens. I first thought slow shutter and a wind but her hair didn't agree...

You could probably do that kind of DOF with like 70-200 mm lens at a fast aperture setting.

Great idea - I just started a thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/785989-Photos-of-holiday-light-displays?p=13581845#post13581845) for posting holiday displays.

That shot was actually taken with this:

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSLovIplT4xIMYkhB-uCtAdFYoz3OUkt1Y9l_a7LH1T7IoLKvi8LQX0skBY9g

Olympus C5050 - loved that camera. And the gaussian blur give a slightly different 'bokeh' than using a long lens with a fast aperature. To me it always added a surreal dream like quality to the image.

[QUOTE=half_bent;13589057]I do not agree that a portrait must show the face!

You are technically correct as I would have entered a maternity portrait framed to show the extended belly and the embrace of hands. A portrait really reflects the emotion through light painting (from full to shaddow detail) and isn't limited to the face, but the face is historically the primary emotional feature as it reflects the affect.

That's very close to Jacksonville Landing and the main street bridge actually. Riverwalk I think it's called. That in the background is some fancy hotel I think.
