Bicycle Mechanics - Searching for a good headset

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello,
I'm building a mountain bike and have bought several components (most of them are Shimano XTR M960). I have a Trek Elite 9.8 2003 frame, a Zokes Elite threadless fork. I'm searching for a compatible headset for the frame and fork.
What headset would you recommend? I'm looking for something light and durable.
Thanks.

Chis King is the best, bar none.
Chis King is the best, bar none.Yeah, but they make more sense to me when I buy em brand new for $50.

Far out in first is Chris King. Second FSA. After that it goes downhill IMO.
Honestly I can't figure out why Kings are so much better. Its cups and two sealed cartridge bearings. I am willing to bet King doesn't make the bearings, just the housings, and the housings are nearly inconsequential to the operation of the headset. I have a $40 FSA Duron X I like.

I don't spend more than 40 to 50 bucks for a headset. There is absolutely no reason to. Under normal use, a King set is no better than my generic $25 headset.

Indeed so, ive had my Cane Creek s2 for a while and i love it. 30 bucks yo cant go wrong, the only reason i stop using it is becuase my new frame requires zero stack, if not for that i woyld still be using my s2 i picked up new on ebay for 20 bucks.

Same deal with a Timex compared to a Rolex. They both keep time, but the Rolex does it with more panache. I've know several people who've transfered the same King headset from bike to bike. I don't know any who'd to the same for a lesser headset.

While I lust over a king headset, I am happy with my Cane Creek.

My same cheap Ultegra headset has been on and off of at least 10 different frames over the years. Still smooth as butter... ;)

I ran the same FSA Pig upper/Primo Gorilla lower on three different bikes.
