I've been riding a Campy-equipped Waterford Sport Tourer for about 13 years, riding 16 miles r/t to work.

My company recently stopped subsidizing memberships to the local health club so I took the opportunity to ditch the specialized gear and get back to basics. I figured I would ride into work in "normal" clothes, park, and go right to work. To that end, I bought a Workcycles Secret Service (I know, I know...far from "basic"). I upgraded the pedals to Ergon PC-2s and ditched the Basta Pilot LED in favor of a Lumotec IQ Fly RT and so far, so good.

I've been lurking here for awhile looking for info on winter riding without bike-specific gear, so thanks for all the fish...I mean info!

Welcome aboard.
So how does commuting on the
Workcycles compare with the Waterford?

Commuting on the Workcycles takes longer than the Waterford. I can do the 8 miles to work on the Waterford in 27 minutes, but then I have to stop at the gym to shower and change clothes. Riding the Secret Service, it takes 40 minutes to cover the same distance, but then, as I said, it's park and straight to work.

I really like the Secret Service's riding position. It's very upright. There is no neck fatigue because you're looking straight ahead. There is no ulnar nerve pain because of the swept-back bars and the light touch. I have a Rido saddle on my Waterford which is very comfy, but the Brooks is something else again.

I was on the fence over a 61cm frame or a 65cm frame on the Secret Service. I'm 6'2" and Henry from Workcycles pushed me to get the 65cm. At first I thought the bike was too big, but after a month, I've come to appreciate the extra room on the bike; 65cm was the right choice. I took the Waterford out for a ride last weekend, and couldn't get over how dinky and light it was compared to the Secret Service. Pushing a 55lb. bike for a month makes a 20lb. bike seem like nothing.
