I just stripped the clamp threads on my Suntour XC Power combo levers on my '88 Fuji Sundance. What's the best solution for this? Would most shops be able to retap the thread or drill through and install a nut? It's tough finding a matching replacement, and besides, these are otherwise in perfect condition.

Another option that might be possible if there is enough material where the threads are is to put in a Helicoil. I would much prefer that over the other options.

is the stripped bolt in such a place that you could just get a longer bolt,
and put an external nut on it?
If its a blind hole , then the helicoil is the best fix.

Thanks for the replies guys; looks like Helicoil is the way to go. Is this something I'd be able to do myself, or how much does this fix usually go for at a shop?

hxzero: Installing the Helicoil is easy enough, the problem is that you need the special tap and insertion tool which would probably make it uneconomical to do yourself. I don't know what a shop would charge, but the job should take 10 minutes, tops. Drill out the hole, tap it, insert Helicoil, break off the driving tang, done. The Helicoil will be stronger than the original threads and be basically invisible.

I ended up just finding a 3mm longer bolt to grab the remaining threads. A shoddy fix, but will probably take it in to get it helicoiled should the remaining threads strip.

+1, Helicoil installation takes a few tools, tap to cut a new thread,
and the tool to install the coil.
its like a spring made of diamond cross section steel wire.

Or, you can get a 1mm larger diameter bolt, buy a tapto match and use it,, much easier than helicoil, less messy etc etc
