Classic & Vintage - Melton Frame

Greetings all,

I have Melton Frame that I used to ride in college. I am thinking of pulling it out of the closet and restoring it. Can anyone give me an idea as to where to start?

I live in Columbia, SC where he started.

cyclart.com has the decals ,they do good work i hear. http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=19626 here's mine when it was new. i have to restore mine also. its a big project that ive been dragging my feet on for awhile now.been buying up frames i wanted when i was a younger kid and didnt have the money back then.i really need to get back on track on it.

This is my 1st post. I have a green Melton with a cream color headtube . I am getting ready to build it. I picked up a 1st gen Dura ace group of of Ebay.

"Restoring" means different things to different people...
Do you want it looking like it did when new, like a nicely kept original that was used, like something more modern...?

Before deciding where to start, how bad does it look?
I think it's always best to keep the original finish, if at all possible.
Components can always be cleaned up or replaced with new/restored contemporary bits.
If the original paint's just too far gone for your liking, contact Joe Bell (super cool dude!), Brian Baylis, Jim Allen, Peter Weigle, CyclArt... Any of the above can do great work, but if Joe Bell wants to do it, he'd be my first choice. If Joe's too busy, give Brian a call; he also does excellent work. Brian recently did a frame for me that looks great. Check Brian's lug striping on my frame:

Sam: I sent a separate e-mail earlier...I have a buddy in Columbia who's hobby is trading in vintage parts/peices and bikes. He'd be a wealth of info for you, and knew Mike, also. He was excited to hear about my Melton, but I was too embarased to bring it out of the dust to show it to him.

You didn't buy the frame from First Flight Cycles in NC did you? they had a green/cream Melton in a picture of a swap meet.
Send pics and info (name, description & origin of frame, equipment, serial no., etc.) and I'll add you to my Melton frame locator database.

I bough my green 55cm frame last year at the Cirque in Greensboro, Nc last May. Its Reynolds 531 and has chrome fork crown and tips. It was built sometime around 1975 or 1976 in Five Points area of Columbia, SC.

I am not sure who it was built for. I was told by people on the CR list it was equipped with Campagolo Super Record. Peter Gilbert mentioned that it was originally outfitted with Super Record
components. It does not have a serial number that i can find anywhere.

When I purchased it it had a OMAS Cartridge Bearing Bottom bracket. It has a Campy Headset. Also has a painted to match Silca Pump.

I am building it up with a Shimano Dura ace group from 1976. I am trying to find a 36 hole Mavic Mod E2 rim so I can build the wheels for it. Any one have one or a Pair to Sell or Trade?
