Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - rim skin

i am not going to bother with correct spelling or linking you guys because the last time i did so i got called a shill.

and mods, please don't close the thread on this; i legit didn't get opinions or answers on the last thread and i'm trying to get other people's opinions on this.

thing called rim skin. it's like this thing made for deep-v rims. it's like a sticker thingy, and you have the option for reflective thingy.

Anyone know if it's ILLEGAL to ride with this? It makes your whole rim reflective. Some cities have laws regarding minimum number of reflective surfaces (i currently have a rear reflector permanently on my bike and a front / back light when I've got my bag on)

sorry i had to be vague as possible but it's to keep the people with 1000+ posts from calling me a shill because hey, i just want some honest advice.

I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada if that changes things.

You do know that pretty much all vehicle laws of all jurisdictions are on the internet these days, right???

Here are the BC laws that apply:


(3) Only amber reflectors may be mounted on the front or side of a vehicle.
(4) Only red reflectors may be mounted on the rear of a vehicle or on the side of the vehicle at or toward the rear of the vehicle.

I'd go with yellow if you're really concerned about following the law. Hopefully your local Dudley Do-rights will consider yellow close enough to amber.

You could also run yellow front, red rear for that hott Thruster look.

I can't imagine a cop ticketing a cyclist for being too visible, but maybe that's what they do in Canada. If it were me, I'd go to a local sign shop and have them cut me a piece of vinyl for half the price. It would take a little more work though.

Bikes come stock with white reflectors in the wheels. Quite a few bike tires have white reflective strips along the sidewall and list that those strips legally allow you to ride without the ugly wheel reflectors.

Logic says there is no problem with having the whole rim either in front or back being white reflective.

Just get the ones that are white from the front, red from the back, and amber from the side. What's that stuff called again, something like prismatic reflex or retro-prismo reflective coating. Whatever, they use it on highways back east, mostly up the mountains where it gets really foggy. You should google it. I would but my Internet is busted.
