I'm looking for a new bike that's around $300. I know it's tough to get a decent one at that price, but I want one that will last a while.
Is this (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/sst_steel.htm) a good choice?
I was also thinking about this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004W8LG1S/ref=s9_simh_gw_p200_d0_g200_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0JZD3EDW6YZ1W3NQVTNV&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846) one because of the 30+ awesome reviews, but the colours aren't that pleasant.
Any opinions?

I had a Walmart single speed bike called the Genesis (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Genesis-700C-Mens-Fixed-Speed-Track-Bicycle/14089740) which was made by Kent (same company that makes the Takara you linked. It seems that this is their new "track" model.
I got that bike on sale for $110 shipped and that's the only reason I bought it. It was my first single speed and I thought this would be a cheap way to try riding one.
It was heavy Hi-Ten steel and I ended up changing most of the parts on the bike (crank, brakes, handlebars). I probably could have bought myself a Kilo with all the money I spent, but I did have fun with that bike all summer before someone stole it.
I wouldn't buy that bike again, especially for $200, or if you plan on upgrading parts.
I now have a Kilo and am happy with it. The difference is noticeable.
That sloping top tube looks pretty awful. Go for a Kilo TT, the most supreme bicycle in the worlt. Don't forget to throw a 650cc rim on the front for proper credit score
