Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Surly Pugsley. Whats the point?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

At $1,500 it's pretty ridiculous to buy a bike for just sand or snow. Also, it's not SSFG so it's probably better to start this up in the general, commuter, or mtb subforums.

Wrong. It can be built up ss or with gears. Its not ridiculous if you have to deal with a lot of sand or snow.

"what's the point of _____. i don't get why anyone would need ____"
10% of the people on this forum actually NEED their bike(s), the other 90% just WANT their bike. (not that they don't need A bike, just don't need whatever badass track/road/DH/etc bike they ride)
because it's fun, it's badass, and i always want one more bike than i have. that's why.

As long as the trails aren't too rough. A local guy has one and I've replaced his freehub body three times so far.

A friend of mine has a SS Pugsley and it is pretty awesome. Don't knock it till you try it.

That's like asking... "Why do 29ers exist?"
Because road tires are too skinny!!

If you've ever been wallowing through soft snow, struggling to hold your line and spinning along at 4 mph on flat level trail, and had someone on a fat tired bike cruise blissfully by riding on top of what you're sinking into, you'd understand.
There's a growing number of singletrack mountain bikers who ride them here. They pack out the summer trails with snowshoes, then ride; some people just refuse to learn to ski.

Basically, the funnest bike I have ever ridden. If you ever get the chance to ride one on the terrain it was designed for, you will understand.

The owner of a local shop had one of these when they first came out, his was a fixed gear. That was actually the first fixed gear I ever rode haha. The price is a little steep but that bike is a lot of fun, you can practically bounce on those huge tires.

I kinda get it, in the sense that I could swap wheels for faster riding on more firm terrain. Save the fat wheels for when it gets snowy?
GriddleCakes
12-06-11, 03:14 PM
That makes very little sense.
There's enough clearance to run 26" wheels with fat tires, or 29" wheels with normal sized MTB tires. There a few winter commuters who use the fat tired wheelset on snow days, and use the 29er wheelset mounted with studded tires for ice days.

12-06-11, 03:37 PM
For some reason I was thinking along the lines of replacing the fat wheels with 29" wheels, which led me to think "Why not just buy a 29er?"
Too much on the brain ATM.

I want a Moonlander. I saw a dude riding a Pugsley at the cross race on Sunday. The sand pits were so gnarly that even he bogged down and lost it.

My shop carries them and while I don't own one, I test ride them whenever I can. They are impossible to ride without a big ass goofy grin on my face. Jumping over snowbanks becomes childs play. A guy bought one from us that he is going to have a custom rack fabricated to hold his compound bow. He wants to go camping and hunting in remote areas. For people who don't have a lot of snow or sand to play in they probably don't make as much sense. For those of us here though, they open up a whole new world of riding.

If you can look at a Pug/Moonlander and not want to immediately go play on it, you must have no joy in your heart.
