Cyclocross - Need wheel recommendations ... to ensure marital bliss

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I bought my dear wife a used, but near mint, 2009 Redline Conquest Pro this summer so she could do some cyclocross racing. Well wouldn't you know, she was bitten by the racing bug. Now she wants lighter racing wheels for Christmas. Her bike has the stock Ritchey Pro wheelset. Since we want to be able to send our kids to college in a few year, I don't want to break the bank, but I want to get something that will be an improvement.

From what I can tell from searching the web, her wheels are nominally about 1800 grams for the set (I didn't weigh them). I found a Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset 2009 on the Performance site for $399. They're nominally 1550 grams. Would this be a good set for her? Does anyone have any other ideas? I could go a little higher, but I really don't want to spend more on wheels than on the bike. She's pretty small (~5'4", 118 pounds ... or 62 cm, 53 kg)

For lightest weight: Williams Cycling System 19, 1440g, $500
For best cross performance: Velocity A23 Comp wheelset, 1580g, $550

"A23" refers to a rim width of 23mm, which gives better cornering traction and better resistance to pinch-flatting. Getting alloy nips would marginally save weight and not cost much. The "Pro" build is 1400g but brings the price up to $800.

Rims for sew ups are lighter because they are not needing to restrain
the internal air pressure forces pushing outward with the tire's beads.,
just a surface to Glue the tire onto.

basic: Mavic Reflex.. laced to a common Shimano hub.

Psimet's "budget" cross build is about $400 for a 1500g wheel set...that is, if she's ready to go tubular.

Check out novemberbicycles.com handbuilt 23 clinchers w/sapim sub 1500 grams and less than $500

The elites are nice, but check the differences to the 2010 and newer version. They go both road and cx tubeless easily, but have the narrower width than the 23's.

Check CL for a triathlete's 'old' wheels. There's a set of Williams wheels on CL DC for $500. Carbon-y goodness for cheap!
