Fifty Plus (50+) - My bike computer broke...

Just wondering on opinion...

I'd drop some heavy hints and give Santa a shot.

Don't delegate: too many computers and ways to buy.

Sounds like it's time to upgrade, or not. It's all good.

I rode without a computer for a good 5 years, 'til a couple of months ago when I got a smart phone, now I just use that when I want to know mileage.

Buy a new more expensive bike. Your bike has obviously caused your computer to go wonky. :)

^^^ and buy a Garmin that matches the new bike.

:D And if you riding kit doesn't match the paint on the new bike you need to get a new kit also....

Wogster, I don't know how serious your post is. In reading what you've posted since participating in the 50+ forum you strike me as someone who tends to think through things from start to finish. So, on the serious side. If you drop any hints, I'd make them as specific as possible. Getting a gift computer that is close to doing what you want it to do might leave you frustrated rather than pleased.

OR.... recognize that bikes and computers form a marriage of sorts. Hence, since the computer has passed on, a period of mourning might be in order before hanging a new one on the handlebars.

You need to self-Santa, that is buy yourself a Christmas present. After all, who is more deserving?

Time to Garminize, IMO. The Edge 500 comes in blue/white, black/red, and a neutral gray.

Your right of course I do think things through, I broke the computer wiring harness. I moved the bike on the trainer from the cellar to the spare room upstairs, a room that has electric heat, which we don't use as it's too expensive. Around here, just to heat a 3m x 3m room to 17℃ costs about $100/month, so we don't. The room is actually not bad for training, you don't sweat like a pig in there.... When I mounted it back on the trainer, the trainer caught the wire and pulled it loose from the sensor. I can order a new wiring harness except I need to order it from Vancouver and the shipping fees, plus the cable are more then I paid for the computer. So I might as well get another one, if I replace it at all...

It was helpful for some things, like cadence building, in that I know know what 90RPM feels like, and total distance for maintenance issues, like knowing you have 4,000km on a chain or a set of tires. However it's become too much about numbers, and less about just getting some exercise and fresh air. Here is the plan, for the late fall and winter, I will simply ride based on time, so if I ride the trainer for 30 minutes, I ride for 30 minutes. How far did I actually go, well 0m hopefully, because I am on the trainer, and if I actually go any distance, then the trainer has collapsed, and that's not a good thing:eek:

Once I am back on the road in the spring, I know how long most of my rides are, because I have either planned them out, or have done them before:innocent:..... So my next step is to take the computer off, pull the battery and put it away, which is what I will do, when I am finished posting here. The one from the mountain bike is going on the Missus bike this winter, which was already planned, I was going to get a new one for the mountain bike, but I may not bother.

Most any bike shop around would have a magnet. I lost one in Lake Placid NY and the bike shop gave me one.

I sounds like you may not need a computer. We are all different. I like to keep track of that kind of stuff. Go figure.

Around here many of the roads have mile posts, so you don't even need the map. If you want to be high-tech, then you can use a digital watch.:D

Had a computer many moons ago and found that I started caring way too much about the numbers and not the ride.
None of my bikes has a computer. I know how fast I'm going by how much it hurts.

With enough of a Head Wind, I'd like to know air speed,
as i know the ground speed will suffer.

I have 5 bikes. I only have 1 bike computer of any type, and it's my son's old digital watch he was going to throw away. I put it on the handlebar of the bike I use for commuting.

I know how to fix it, I need a new wiring harness, which MEC says isn't available online at the moment, so I would need to drive to one of their stores, the one that is closest is London, they don't have it, Toronto is listed as low stock, which means they don't have any, at least they haven't the 5 times I have called that store looking for an item listed as low stock, they didn't. Barrie has some, but it's a pain in the rear to get there in the Wintertime, because the highway between Owen Sound and Meaford is closed half the winter due to the fact they get a lot of Lake Effect snow along there, so you have to go almost all the way south to Toronto and back North. Given the wind right now (out of the West at 26km/h gusting to 44), I'm surprised they aren't getting hammered...... With gas at $1.20/L it costs a lot more to go get the harness then to order a new computer.....

Now this computer was on my road bike, I never actually liked it on there, because it doesn't fit the look of an older bike, it's a little like putting a CD Player in an '83 Ford, it doesn't look quite right. Besides I was getting to the point of using it just as an odometer anyway. This is what I really need, something akin to the odometer you find on a city bus, just shows the total number of km or miles, on a simple display. Would need some way of deciding units, miles or km and a way of setting the wheel size. Would contain a tilt switch and a display, you clip it to a spoke, it just goes around and around, shows full km or miles.

Got one, and my computer is back up and running. Glad it was just the magnet...
