Folding Bikes - Educate me please, 1980's Dahon 3-speed

There is a Dahon 3 speed for sale locally, I'm either 2nd or 3rd in line for it so I figure it will be gone, so for now I'm just looking to get educated on these folders and on this one specifically. Seller says it is from the 80's, has something wrong with either the 3-speed shifter or the hub (I'm guessing just the shifter mechanism on the handlebars), and has a cracked rear fender. Apart from that it looks like it would be a fun project.

I'm not sure how well this one would hold up for me, just under 6' tall, weigh over 200Lbs, would probably use the bike as a commuter and local grocery getter, and as something to take on trips like if my wife wants to go to Chicago with her kids and we head down on the train (not all the trains have accomodation for full sized bikes).

Any issues on this bike in particular to watch out for? I've read a bit this morning about seat tube cracking, and hinges creaking/squeeking, anything else to know? Since I'll probably miss out on this one I'm just looking to get educated on them. If I do miss on this one then I'll be watching for another one to maybe get before next summer.

Oh, and before I forget, what size do you think the tires are on this one? They look much smaller than 20".

I have a very similar bike. I replaced the rear hub (Sturmy Archer 3 speed) with a single speed coaster brake wheel.

The bike seems very flexy and with its low pressure 16" tires doesn't roll very well. I have kept mine because it is kind of neat, and was my first folder, but I don't really ride it much.

How much are they asking for the bike?

$40, which is probably why the first in line is driving an hour to look at it. But if it is a flexy rider then I'll have to think more about it.

I have this 40 year old english sports car .... and I am third in line to buy it.... I hear that the transmission needs to be replaced... besides the usual stuff like the rooftop, the tires , the the the .... Its a small car but I am 7 foot tall ..
I want to use the car for daily transport
it looks neat ... could be a nice project ....


Of course the above is just an example ... I am certainly not 7 foot tall and I dont have a Sprite or Midget floating around ...

if you want something reliable and much more fitting for your size and weight , than you need to buy something much much newer ...
this 40 dlr would be a lot of headache and two 5 mile trips and than all the fun would be hanging in the garage

Having once owned a Triumph TR3A and later an MG Midget, I do understand. You should have seen people look at me with my 120 pound Chesapeake Bay Retriever that I had at the time as we got out of the Midget at a park or river to get him some exercise.

Decided to pass on the Dahon above, even if the seller does call.

I have one and replaced the 3 speed hub with a fix wheel ad just brought it out for the winter.It is a bit flexy and creaks I would get a new Dahon instead.

D. Hon was still trying out things in the 80s, they were a bit crude..
trying to see what worked ... at a low build cost.
