Between Pcad's axe thread and Fuzzbox' wordyRappinghood I gots inspired to start a thread for foo folks to post their music. We've had a couple of people starting their own music threads here in the past, but I'd love to see this thread stick around, with everyone contributing who wants to.

I wanna make some new recordings, but we have almost everything packed away right now due to work being done on our place, but here is a link (http://www.myspace.com/566953926/music/songs/major-taylor-39-s-grave-40-live-2003-41-85756265) to a song I wrote about Major Taylor. Sorry, super sloppy live version - my friend and his wife did a groovy faux moog cover which is linked off the Wikipedia page for MT

That was great AnthonyG! A uke with a banjo sound, the best of two worlds! Twice in three months I've gone done to the music shop intent on buying a tenor but a soprano uke always manages to follow me home instead.

I mainly play gtr but have played bass a bit for friend's band over the past decade or so. Here's a show (http://rabidinthekennel.com/artists/the-best-of-the-new-breed-volume-1) we did for web radio last year (scroll down 4 or 5 spots to "Phillip Eno"). There's a mini video of the day here (http://rabidinthekennel.com/blog/video-phillip-eno-session-excerpts).

Yes it sounds great doesn't it. I started out with Concert scale ukulele's and I've been working my way up through Tenor scale and now a Baritone scale ukulele. The banjo ukulele is a step back to concert scale but that's the way they come. I've tried to play Soprano ukulele's but they are just too small for me.

So I go to the electric blues jam Open Mic tonight and there's this guy up there playing and while he's a bit erratic, I really do enjoy some of his playing, particularly his rhythm fills. The guy really seems to know his stuff. I'm talking to him afterwards and it turns out he's a guitar teacher I ran into at the local music store a couple of weeks ago. Perfect. I'll hook up with him twice a month and we can learn some blues/funk numbers that we can then play together @ some future Open Mic jam. When you meet a guy like that twice in a few weeks and he coincidentally turns out to be the guitar teacher you ran into @ Alto Music, it's God's way of telling you that's your new guitar teacher.

Another observation is that many of the people who get up to sing @ Open Mic can't really sing. I'm no Grammy winner, but I can sing better than most of the people I've heard @ these things, so I'm starting to get more confidence up. Hey, at the end of the day I can't sing either, but it's all relative. I'm like a fast Fred on vocals.

It doesn't matter because they all sound like crap through tinny laptop speakers. I ordered the humbucker version of the same axe today. Amazing deal. I played all these $2-$3K LP's at the store. I like the Korean Agile LP knockoff just as much and it's $500 with the case. I figure if I ever sell them I'll get $300 on eBay all day long. Hard to lose too much buying guitars that nice for that cheap.

yeah, in the end ya just gotta put yourself out there once in a while and have fun with it. Most people out there aren't too great, it's no biggie.

Having said that, hooking up with the teacher and jamming is great - like riding with people faster than you; as long as you hang in and don't get completely dropped, there's no better way to up your game.

Yep. I let my self consciousness stand in my way of enjoying music for too long. I'm too self critical, at the end of the day it doesn't matter, none of us are getting a record contract, we all do it for laughs. I love playing and singing, and I'm really not that bad at it, so why not? You can't get better playing in your house alone, you have to play OUT, with other musicians, and in front of a room, for a number of reasons. This teaching scenario I hooked up with tonight is really ideal, precisely what I need, the right style of playing, the teacher has the right chops, we can jam together @ the same open mic night. Actually I think we may both enjoy it (the teacher and myself). I'm a somewhat advanced player compared to a lot of the students a guitar teacher is going to get, and I'm rather motivated, if I were a guitar teacher I'd like a student like that.

Plus all the interaction with other amateur musicians is very stimulating and what I need. What's daunting for me is a loud, dark room, pedal boards with 8 different stomp boxes, trying to get used to hearing yourself in a band mix, etc. But the only way to learn your way through all that is to do it.

pgoat
12-15-11, 09:32 AM
Amen to all that. Just go have fun with it. Teachers can often have fun with students b/c questions often arise that fosters and rekindles their own intellectual and artistic curiosity - this is true in every discipline, I'm sure. So I'm sure he's getting stuff out of this too.

As far as all the other hoops to jump through it can be a drag especially if you hook up with people who don't listen to the others playing, turn up too loud all the time, etc. It's not easy but I've tried to steer clear of those types when I can. When you can hook up with good musicians who are also good people (and this is rare), it's like heaven.

I also try to keep my set up as simple as possible - and bring two of everything to gigs when possible. Less stuff to go wrong. More often than not I'm just gtr > cable > amp > plug in the wall. Sort of a musical 'fixie' approach? Of course with the right gtr and amp, that's all you need. It's a boring sound sometimes but better that than futzing with dead batteries, faulty patch cables, etc etc - just my $.02.

What's daunting for me is a loud, dark room, pedal boards with 8 different stomp boxes, trying to get used to hearing yourself in a band mix, etc. But the only way to learn your way through all that is to do it.

My advice here... is if you're playing through stomp boxes non-stop, you didn't buy the right guitar/amp combination for you (unless you're playing overly effected stuff to start with). I've played with people who have never actually played just their guitar and amp. They have no idea what the two sound like together.
Find your Guitar(s)/Amp(s) combination, then find the boxes and boards that compliment what you're doing there. Remember, it's your sound, don't be a slave to pedals.

I occasionally plug in a wah pedal or an echo, neither of which my amp or guitars can supply. Otherwise, when I want a change in tone, I swap guitars. Aside from a Valco/National/Supro and a Danelectro, I've managed to collect all the tones I want in guitars and a few I don't (really need to ditch a few strat clones).

jfmckenna
12-16-11, 01:37 PM
I've got several stomp boxes lined up and I use every one of them. That's how you get signature tone IMO. Other wise you just sound like a guy playing through a Twin or a Marshal or what ever. But yeah for beginners you definitely want to be able to play the guitar before you get into changing the tone. I almost always have either delay or chorus on. Auto wha for a few songs, two different distortion boxes, a compressor, Cry Baby wah and a Uni Vibe :D

This is rough (http://www.myspace.com/566953926/music/songs/jewel-wma-86110769) - but nice tone in spots; Guild Nightbird, basically a chambered les paul, with DiMarzio PAF style pups, into a boss reverb pedal and a 1970 Traynor YBA-1 through a closed back 2x12. I think we were in a room with no PA, so I'm just screaming over the music. Actually with my voice, it's best to NOT have a PA.
