Bicycle Mechanics - Should disc brakes make noise? Can I stop it?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Have a pair of Avid CPS disc brakes. There seems to be a recurring problem with squeaking with them.

Questions:

1. is this normal?

2. is the adjustment easy to do?

3. what do you do when LBS sometimes has difficulty removing drag?

thanks

I'll review your responses tomorrow. It's time to hit the trails again....

Depends on what happens right before it starts squeeking Ie a puddle etc. also there might be an issue with a warped rotor.
Not at all, it's in the instuctions
Follow the instructions

adjustement with avids are easy. Im more than happy, you can adjust from both sides which is a nice thing indeed. squeling is caused by crap on the rotor, its the nature of the beast sometime

Try cleaning your rotors with rubbing alcohol - this may take off offending junk.

Also, remove the pads and verify there is no foreign matter embedded in the pads.

he might not have the instructions if they came already installed on the bike he bought from the LBS.

The instructions come with EVERY set and should have been provided WITH the bike. The internet's also a lovely thing - look what I found on the Avid website http://www.sram.com/_media/pdf/avid/discbrakes/bbdb-mtn-165-install.pdf

Thanks for the link. I have a printed copy of the instructions now. Last time at LBS they were getting tired of working on my bike with me waiting and were anxious to call the job done.

It could be glazed pads. A quick rub with some sandpaper will knock the "shine" off. And clean your rotors like Mudpie said.
