I have had my older road bike tuned up not too long ago. Have not been by the bike shop.
But as I turn the crank, I hear a metallic clicking noise in certain higher end gear combinations. Usually in biggest or middle chainrings with the rear towards a small cog combination. Is this caused by the chain hitting a derailleur somewhere, I suspect.? If so, not sure which way to adjust the derailleur? Will this cause chain wear? Sounds like the noise is in the front derailleur.
Hate it. I am very sensitive to noise, and like the sound of the chain whirring, without the metallic clicking. Any ideas, thanks.

Sounds to me like the front Dr outer limit needs to be tweaked slightly to put it a little further from the chainring.

You also might be able to move it a little further out with the shifter, if there is another click to go (assuming it's an indexed shifter, ala 105 etc.), or if it's a friction shifter adjust it so it holds the cable tighter and doesn't allow it to move back after you've shifted.

Had that problem once. Turned out to be the chain pin that was last inserted was just the slightestbit farther out on one side. every time it went though the front der, it clicked.
