I have asked a couple of other questions about this tour on here, but here's the background: I'll be touring in Colorado this summer on a Raleigh Sojourn, probably with 700x40 or 45 tires. Is riding the alpine loop near Silverton (Cinnamon and Engineer passes) a bad idea with a 4-pannier setup? There are a few journals on crazyguyonabike of this route, but all of them are credit card touring. If you have ridden over either of those passes (especially Engineer; it looks worse in pictures), I'd appreciate your thoughts on the viability of using panniers, or if you think I should just stick to the smoother roads.

People have done the GDMRB with four panniers. E.g.,
