Winter Cycling - Mittens and STI levers

Any advice, either pro or con? It's supposed to get down into the 20's next week and if I recall correctly from last winter, that's about the temperature that my gloves failed to keep my hands warm.

Get new gloves. Black Mountain are the best, but any flexible ski/snowmobiler/cross country ski glove should work.

Where can I find Black Mountain gloves?

I bought these (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=140&subcategory=1225&brand=&sku=12151&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=) and so far they have been TOO HOT but we haven't gotten into the 20s yet. In the mid 30s my hands are sweating in these though.

They are available at mountaining shops. They are rock climbing gloves. Caution they are warm. At windchill 35F+, you want to remove the liners. I didn't even notice the cold at 13F. I've been out with them in colder temps, but it doesn't get that cold here so don't have recent data.

Went for a 30k ride today -10 deg C. (14 F) I use Pearl Izumi "lobster" style winter gloves, hands never got cold. I also have sti shifters no problem shifting with these gloves.

I find doubling up on my gloves gets me down into the teens with little discomfort. Inner glove is a nice sports activity type from Wally-World, outer one is your generic brown cotton work glove.

I do have problems with my right index finger, the result of losing an argument (drunken) with a plate glass window. Having severed most of the nerves and reduced the blood flow, it gets quite chilled. Cut a finger of an old neoprene glove to give him his own lil nitecap.

Local farm / hardware store had some nice bright yellow thinsulate gloves, definitely on my list for the upcoming plunge into sub-zero rides.

I just wanted to pass this on. I bought a pair of mechanic's gloves that are working really good for me. Have not found a lower limit of where they are no longer comfortable but are great into the 20's. I bought them about one size larger than what would be considered a good fit for mechanic's gloves. They block the wind and don't seem to make my hands sweat. They are also cheap at about $10.00 a pair at places like Menards and Lowes.

It was -19C/-2.2F with windchill -40C/-40F in Montreal yesterday, and I was quickly too cold in my new five finger Kombi gloves which I will return to Mountain Equipment Coop.

Today was -28C/-18F, with 13-30km/h winds bringing it down to -38C/-36.4F, and I was fine riding around for over four hours of start and stop errand running in Craft three-finger claws with cheap Auclair fleece liners.

For me, anything less than 30F and I need mittens.

They sell a liner glove separately, and the combination is toasty yet I get a good feel on the brakes, etc. I like being able to layer down, and they are very light for packing.
