Fifty Plus (50+) - 1000 miles

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I know many of you bike much farther, but today my computer informed me that I had logged 1000 miles while commuting and shopping since May. I feel proud. :D

Great job!
1,000 less miles on a car, and you got a lot of exercise.

Somebody is sure to add a posting that they have done 16,000 miles since May. I think 1000 is pretty darned good, especially on a "Walmart beater" (what is that?).
Ken
Congratulations. I'll bet you are more fit then ever. If you don't look at it any other way you have saved 67 gallons of gas at 15mpg and $134 at $2.00 a gallon.
My coworkers were amazed at my accumulated savings over 6 years of commuting.
A side effect of my commuting is severe reduction of annual mileage on the car. I used to drive about 12,000 miles a year. My annual commute is about 2,500 miles. I now only put about 4,000 miles on the car. Where did the 5,500 miles go to?
Keep on cycling...

Fantastic! I hit 2500, but none commuting.
2 years ago, I was lucky to have hit 500.
Keep Going!!!!!!!

Congrats! I'll end up with about 2200- a high for me. The goal I met this year was doing my first full century. Next year's goal - 2500 miles - not a major push but 3000 might be tough.

1000 is a serious achievement. I wish you many more, minus the visits of that nasty wee imp the punc***e fairy, the saying of whose name may well invoke a visit...

I've got 955 on my odometer since 8/6. For me, there are 4/5 more commuting days left in the year and a 17 mile RT. Barring any nasty weather, I'll be able to join the 1000 mi club! A full year should be 2500+. Woo Hoo! Congrats Jessica!

...especially on a "Walmart beater" (what is that?)...
I have no idea what a "Walmart beater" is, either... but if it has to do with giving Walmart a beating, I'd be glad to join in!
(Oh, and Jessica, congrats on the 1,000 miles. I don't have that much yet - I just got my bike in October - but it's comin'. Maybe by next May?)

Bike from Walmart, $60 new. It's a "Roadmaster Mt. Sport"... I added rear rack, fenders, headlamp, tail blinkies, removable front basket, a backpack, a rear trunk I already had, panniers, pump and tools (etc.), and a low cost computer.
For the commute I use one of the containers (not all) and for groceries I use all. The extras definately cost more than the bike, but *it gets me there*!!

I would guess that riding a "Wal-Mart" beater 1,000 miles is about the same as riding a road bike 1,500 miles or more. I am so proud of you! :D

How far is your daily commute?
Jessica
12-13-04, 08:38 AM
16 miles, but lite rail helps me on most days. I usually ride all the
way home once a week. I commute all year round, but then, this is
California... I actually ride between 25 and 45 miles most weeks.

assuming you averaged 12 mph that means you spent 83.33 hours on the bike. if you pedaled at an average cadence of 70, that means you would have turned over your cranks almost 350,000 times!! i'm being very conservative with those assumptions, but i'm sure that's in the ballpark. congrats!

Just for commuting and shopping, that's quite a few miles. Although I've ridden further myself, it's mostly recreational. She's got a lot of time turning her cranks that I haven't, and probably a lot more enjoyment doing it.

old thread, new mileage: 2800 miles on odometers: more than 25 miles a week for three years. Closer to 50 miles a week nowadays, and looking to increase.
Cool, I am pleased.
How neat to see an old thread, and there you are still going strong! I've got about 1800 on my bike since I bought it 1 year ago. Do you still have the same bike?

This thread, in BF "years," is clearly 50+ !
Good going! To put it in perspective, it takes me half a year to do what you did in two months.

hey thats great..
I bought my new street ride April 1st and now have about 960 miles on it... lost about 16 lbs so far...
I also have a hybrid that I do short errands on...
Went wout last night at midnight and did 30 miles in 2 hours.. increasing my ave time from 14.2 to 15.
I love the early AM hours.. no traffic and no FL sun to deal with..
I also bought a Heart Rate Monitor which I use for pacing myself.
I am 52, retired and losing the bulk....

Thanks for the update and congratulations.
When you first posted, I was doing 90 miles a week, but circumstances have changed and its down to about 40. But that's not a bad mileage for being car free. Many people drive more than that daily. Heck, some people bicycle more than that daily.
Congratulations. I like to share my mileage too which is now 1090 miles since acquiring my folding steed in April. Have increased my weekly ride to 150+ miles per week with an average ride of 50+ miles. Trying to enjoy the ride as much as I can and logged as many miles before the winter season when I will be in hibernation.

2800 miles on a $60 Wal-Mart bike might be a record!!
Let's see, in order for Digital Gee to equal your "cost per mile ratio" he'll have to put something like 70,000 miles on his bike.

I like the fact that this thread has returned after all that time, and that the reason is such a positive one. I have told many of my biking friends about the supportive nature of the 50+ forum, the sharing of goals met, ideas, pictures, etc. Thanks, Jessica, for giving us one more reason to be proud to be 50+ cyclists.

Between my two bikes I've tallied just over 1,300 miles this year, with rides in every month. The 1,000 plateau is a significant achievement -- savor the moment and let us know when you hit 2,000! :D

Let's see...that first thousand was US$0.06/mile, exclusive of accessories and pie, of course. Pretty good ROI, I'd say. :)

And she is approaching having spent 6000 pennies on 3000 miles of riding!!!
Super ... 1000 mi / 25 m.p.g = 40 gal of gas x $3.00 per gal = $120 extra bucks in your pocket + better health and many hours of enjoyment and relaxation.

That is some great mileage, especially on that bike of yours. If you ever think about upgrading, you might want to check out the Craig's List for Sacramento where you can often find pretty good bikes for few dollars. If you ever want bike advice, the 50+ is the place to ask. Everyone has opinions and are happy to share. In the meantime, just keep riding, you are doing great!!
Good going Jessica, keep going like that and you'll be ready for a cross country in no time, congradulations.

A 2008 Trek Madone 6.9 Pro would make a nice replacement for that Wal-Mart bike.

Yep! And one costs only slightly less than an entire WalMart:p
