Fifty Plus (50+) - A Moment of Silence, Please

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Don't know what's worse. Being stuck in traffic or riding a stationary bike.

I'll continue to ride outside, and train with a class, and use my trainer at home. Weather is the mother of invention;

Of course. You're in FL. Up here in New England getting to the gym often requires a car.

This might not be the time to mention this, but...
...the other day I saw a rotund woman on an electric wheelchair, and what looked like her grandson was walking with her, hand in hand.
I remember it well because they dropped me.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't on a bicycle on their way to the gym. Especially if it was December with snow on the ground.

By horse and carriage?
Having taken the Concord, MA tour a long time ago (lovely place), I was under the impression they huddled around the fireplace reading books all winter long.

Correct.
I wonder what the indians did in the cold weather.

My regular recreational ride route takes me right past a gym. There are always a bunch of SUVs and Hummers stopped, idling, with one person in them, obviously waiting for a parking space close to the door so they won't have to walk a half block to go inside and exercise.

Actually, unlike the normal Hollywood portrayal where everyone used a horse, most people, who lived in towns or villages, didn't have one, because a horse was very expensive, required expensive storage, maintenance and fuel, rural people had them, most were farmers and had work horses and businesses would have them, the average person didn't. Most people though, if you drew a circle 5 miles across centred at the building they were born in, they lived, worked, shopped, died and were buried within that circle. The concept of living in one town and working in another town 40 miles away, has only been in the last 60 years or so, after the beginning of the reign of the car. 100 years ago, you didn't need a gym, you did heavy labour in your job, which kept you in shape.
I wonder how folks in New England got around a century ago.
The gym was called a barn, and one walked through the snow to get to it. After chopping up some wood and hauling it to the house via sled or wheelbarrow, you got the reward of heat and light. It's very hard for me to imagine exercising without a similar reward.

Even when I was an out of shape Clydesdale, I parked wherever. I never idled the car and waited for a close spot.

My kids went to a gym for their high school PE classes and, as it was the last class of the day, I would sometimes pick them up there. As I waited for them in the lobby, I'd occasionally see people take the elevator to the second floor to use the stair climbers.

Well, after the Pilgrims got there, they were caught up in trying to protect their stores of corn, etc. from theft.

That's why I'm in Florida, so i don't have to deal with the snow and cold weather. I'm a woos when it comes to cold weather, especially when there is wind.

Maybe it's just because I'm 'lower income', but the thought of driving to a ride just doesn't compute; of course, I don't go to out-of-town venues, either, I get all the workout I need locally.
I can understand driving to riding venues that are further away (example: living in Indiana and going to ride the Maah Daah Hey Trail), but IN TOWN......?

They might have driven this, a 1911 Pope Hartford.

My grandfather had one, he used it as an SUV in Wyoming, ferrying hunters, geologists and anyone else who wanted to motor in the backwoods.

I am sorry, but WHAT? Toronto Maple Leafs last Stanley Cup win- 1967. Boston Bruins, 2011 and against my home town team. New Englanders know nothing of suffering. :)
At least the traffic moves, albeit slowly and in fits. A stationary bike never does.
Funny! But if a stationery bike is the only bike I can ride, and I don't have one (or a trainer) at home, then what? I'll settle for the stationery bike while I study or read or watch a bit of mindless TV, and then switch to an eliptical or treadmill, and back to the bike if there's time. My commute to the gym is an easy low-traffic drive, a 10-minute trip by car or 30-minutes by bike. And no I don't look for the closest parking space... I drive to the furthest corner and walk --- unless it's pouring rain!

Come on, Lady Yen, even tho you're made of sugar and spice and everything nice, you wont melt in the rain.:D
That reminds me of the time when I went to the gym, I pulled into a parking space, got out and was walking to the door. Behind me some guy starts screaming that I took his spot, and he had to park further from the door(by about 20 feet). insane.
