For me it's a 440 sq ft. Apartment in a complex of 42 buildings. Sounds dreadful, but the buildings are well spaced and the grounds have lots of trees and plants and animals living in them. It's a half a block walk to the bus and all the services I usually need are in the same little valley. The neighborhood is pretty good, nice to walk in with a network of streams full of fish, birds, small mammals etc. The River Trail, Little Rock's big MUP is about 15 minutes ride away and there's a lot of other good riding available and there are two good LBSs within a mile.

I like it, its inexpensive, I don't have to spend time doing maintenance, so I can focus on other things. So it's simple living as in not too much distraction, which is a good thing.

We live in a 1970's bungalow. About 1100SF. Not huge, but it does have a full basement which gives me an extrea 1100SF. We live fairly close to our river bike path (about a minute away). The path is quite long, joining us to other cities. Great biking city!

900SF newer apt in South Carolina's "Upstate"...a bike-unfriendly region. Some LBS people genuinely believe this area is decent for biking. They're oblivious. But the people in this area are quite friendly. They smile and wave before they run you over. How quaint?

Currently looking into a new job in Champaign-Urbana, IL--college town...gotta be better than SC.

Home is a small 'ranch' type house on the farm. Work week apartment is a 1300 sq. ft., 2 bedroom in a renovated former Finish School for girls. Puts me .4 miles from work and .75 miles from my bar.

In Texas, in a nice bedroom community just north of Dallas. 2100 sq. ft house. 3/2/2. Close to schools, shopping and bike trails. Creek and park at end of street so delicious bass are within a few minutes walk. Lots of big old trees, hilly (which is rare in North Texas) and quiet. The wife and I bought the house from my parents in 1999. Mom and dad bought it in 1976.

I two bedroom, two bathroom apartment that I would guess is probably about 1000 square feet. Originally my brother lived here with me (hence two bedrooms), but he moved out, and when my lease is up in February I plan to look for a very small studio apartment. I don't think I need over 250 square feet.

We rent 1940s era ranch in a run down neighborhood in Denver. 900 square feet, two bedrooms, one bathroom, one tiny ass kitchen and a single car garage that is housing bicycles instead of our only car. I personally hate the house and rent is too high for what we get. I want to move when our lease is up, but the wife is wanting to stay...

I live with my wife in a 2400 square foot Cape Cod style house. We raised the kids there and they are on their own now. Place seems too big for me, I'd like to get a small ranch house, but wifey doesn't want to go anywhere. It's pretty much out in the middle of nowhere in Eastern CT.

Live in (rent) a late 40's house in a great central neighbourhood with 3 bedrooms up and one down, have a huge yard and a double garage that serves as my workshop.

Basement has been converted into a small suite and have a nice lady living downstairs.

If the price was ever right and I had the means I'd buy the house and add some things like a fence and a walkout to the rear patio from the master bedroom.

My house is on a wooded hillside with huge douglas fir trees and also lots of maple and cherry trees. It's very shady, perfect for a shifty guy.

I'm renting a smallish 100 year-old shotgun house in central Louisville (Schnitzelburg for the locals). It's plenty big for me and my dogs and cat. I have a basement for laundry and hiding from tornadoes.

I have a small yard with no trees. This makes yard maintenance simple. My backyard is fenced in, which is nice for letting the dogs out.

I'm walking distance from several eating and drinking establishments. I'm 3.5 miles from work, and downtown in general.

Ahhh, you had to ask this question here, huh?

1100 or so SF 1 BR/1 bath apt. Just had all sorts of damage fixed by the co-op (some here will remember an endless thread on this from earlier in the year). What sixty said about timing and price? Lowered price + low interest rates = We are due to sign a contract to buy in a few days....this could be the smartest - or the dumbest - thing I've ever done. Pray for me...

No offense but 440 sq ft?? My wife's walk in closet is over 225 sq ft (16x15). I don't live in a huge house but it is 3 bed, den, 2 and a half bath, 2 car garage, formal living and dining, family room, and a lanai. It is 1890 sq ft in a gated 55 plus community. ALL outside maintenance is done by the association, even painting, raking, power washing, roof . . .everything. Maintenance fees of $295 a month. Association fees of $98 a month entitle us to four pools including the largest resistance pool on the west coast of Florida, racquet ball courts, tennis, a clubhouse to die for with an internet cafe, pool tables, and a concierge service. We have our own trails for riding but right now they are closed due to Bald Eagle nesting within 400 feet of trail.

Did I mention there are no kids? Don;t get me wrong, I love kids and we have ours but I am tired of basketball hoops, skateboards, and teenagers who think they ALL have the fastest 12 year old Honda Civic in town with fart cans.

In my bachelor days I lived in two really tiny apartments and loved it. I couldn't tell you the square footage but they were tiny. But I guess actually when I lived in both I also had another place too for a studio which doubled as a party place. I like to have a party.

I currently share a 2400 sq. foot 2 story home with my wife and son. Big, airy open floor plan. Lots of natural light during the day. Good neighbors in a smallish gated community.

no motor?

My swinging bachelor pad is a late 60's vintage 1,100 square foot condo with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths , a dishwasher and indoor parking. If only it hadn't come with the condo owners association presidency.

These homes were built with couples in mind only. Large walk in closets, no huge jetted tub in master bath but a huge roman type shower instead. Two or three "smallish" extra bedrooms for (un)wanted northerners who wish to overextend their stay. Just what we want, visitors from up north but shorter stays.

I wish I did not have to supply my wife's family a car (and gas) when they come as all are from NYC and have no cars.

Wfin's free room and board service with free car rental and gasoline and insurance tossed in. If I feel cranky, I let them use the 4-door F-150 Lariat at 14 miles to a gallon. You never heard so much moaning and groaning for a $100 fill-up to go to Disney World.

A 1970's embarrassment to the term "carpentry", but it's home.

Other than the pirate camping neighbor below me, it's a very nice place to be. 2 acres, 1100 sq ft with a root cellar and a 10X20 shop, no garage though.

Plans to someday build a separated 2 car garage with guest apartment above it, 2000 sq ft shop on the lower acre, master bedroom suite addition surrounded by greenhouse enclosure of the porches...then I'm set.

Small lake house. 2 BR, 1 BA plus a small office. We lost about 500 sf of living space when we moved in and our basement space was cut to about 1/3 of the size of our former residence. On the up side, we have a private beach and lake access, a short drive to work, we're less than 1 mile from a great MTB trail, there are lots of side streets and dirt roads for riding. With the exception of losing a bathroom, we traded up. :)

Any more, I'd love a three bedroom row home with a small garage. I don't want or need a yard. A small patio out back would be nice.

Problem is, anything in Denver that even resembles a row home is either a) in run down neighborhoods where the schools suck, or b) considered a luxury item and is expensive...

I'm disenchanted with the whole single family home style of living.

Currently a small ~1000 sqft house on a 0.4 acre block. Too much room for one guy and I have junked it up with bikes and computers. I am a mile from a shopping mall train bus etc also close. MUP is a 1/2 mile away. My back yard has been designated a wildlife reserve (by me). Snakes, lizards, turkeys and all manner of critters so I'm never lonely. The turkeys follow me around, probably not something to admit to?

I'm in a small duplex built in the 50s according to the owner. I'm not sure if that was the 1850s or the 1950s. Just renting a small cheap room, much smaller than the walk in closet mentioned.

A Van Down by the River.

I lived in a van full time for 3 and a half very neat years. It wasn't in one place, though.

Why should I be offended? Your fees are almost as much as my rent. The place has 3 pools, a playground, a tennis court and a gym. When my refrigerator quit, I just notified the office and had a new one when I got back from work. Lots of kids around here, and I love it. They have a great energy. And I don't spend much on heating or AC. Since it's just me, it works.
