Cyclocross - New ultra budget build...

Originally I had planned to buy a complete CX rig to race next season. I wanted to have something new and decently nice. I have had exactly one brand new complete bike in my life and one complete used. All my other bikes have been built from the frame up. I was going to treat myself to something new...

Then I realized that isn't how I do things.
Here is what I have so far:

-Used Scattante XRL that was misspelled and listed under lamps/other on ebay. $80 shipped.
-XT 750 hubset that I randomly picked up like 4 years ago for $7. They are basically brand new.
-FSA Gossamer crank $17 will need a BB and a 46t ring.
-6500 Ultegra FD $5.25.
-Shimano 600 RD, I think this came off of my C'dale before I swapped all the parts.
-Control Tech 3a seat post that I have had kicking around unused for years.
-PRO Vibe 7s bar and stem AL version. $75 it was to good of deal to pass up even though I didn't have a use for them when I bought them. Probably way too nice for the bike.
-Huchinson CX tires that I got for free a long time ago. I don't know what model but they are yellow...
-Brakes headset and saddle-TBD. I'll keep watching ebay for deals.

The plan is to run 8sp with Campy Veloce shifters.

Thinking IRO Cold Fusion rims. Would it be stupid to run non machined rims on a CX bike? I only ask because they are out of silver and black in machined. I was thinking silver wouldn't be a big deal when I wore though the anno.

Fork. This is probably going to be the biggest PITA of the build as there are far fewer options in terms of inexpensive carbon cross forks. Maybe now that the season is basically over I can find a take off or something.

Sorry for the long winded post. I get excited when things start falling into place. The frame is scheduled to come in tomorrow. I'll post pictures as all the parts start getting here.

Alright long overdue for an update.

I built my XT hubs (respaced and cut down) in to Campy Omega Strada Hardox tubulars. I had previously had 7403 Dura Ace hubs laced to this rims but realized that the proprietary freehub body was shot before I ever had a chance to use them to much. Even if they are not ideal for CX its better than them not getting any use. I basically have everything else to complete the build either in hand or in the mail.

FD: 6500 Ultegra w/ homemade pulley
RD: 6208 Shimano 600
Crankset/BB: FSA Gossamer 46/39 (Stronglight big ring)/Tiagra 4500 Hollowtech II
Cassette: Sram PG850 11-28
Chain: KMC X8.99
Brakes: Origin 8 Pro Force Cantilever. Probably going to pop some Kool Stop salmons in them.
Headset: Cane Creek 40
Bars/stem: Pro Vibe 7s aluminum
Seatpost: Control Tech Team Issue 3a
Saddle: Sella Italia Concor for now
Pedals: 770 XT
Wheels: 750 XT hubset laced to Campy Omega Strada Hardox tubs. Wheelsmith 14g 3x front and rear.

I think that about covers it. I still need Campy inner cables a cable hanger and bar tape. The fork I ordered is an NOS Carbon Cross Comp from around 09 w/o fender eyelets and I am not sure if it has a hole in the crown. If it does I will run a fork mount cable hanger.

The fork cassette and chain should be here on Tuesday. Then it will actually look like a bike.

Er, Good shape is subjective and I subjectively say they are fairly crappy atm. One is Celeste Bianchi branded and the other is fairly beat black suede and Pinnerello branded. I was thinking they would be good candidates for trying my hand at recovering.

The shifters are just thrown on right now, although I have found that usually like my levers canted back just a bit (I secretly wish I was Tom Boonen).

I am probably going to wish that the head tube was a bit shorter though. There is no hole in the fork to mount a hanger so under the stem it goes.

the frame was high school graduation gift by my father who was/is unemployed due to a military injury. I think he knew i was lusting over the s-works E5 frames and got the closest thing he could budget. the frame has had several builds and may now be the most over dressed aluminum scattante. there are days i feel like upgrading but in the end it does everything i could ask.

keep an eye on the yokota thread. more parts should trickle in this week. this frame was actually my dad's first "good" road bike. my dad and i have both used this frame and it has seem many builds over the years: rx100 downtube, 105 STI, chorus 8spd, tricolor time trial, record 10, and now ofmega.

My tires came, I was expecting 220 tpi... Glanced at the label as I was struggling to get them stretched on to the rim and saw 290tpi. Not bad at all for $41 bucks. Did make me realize that my front wheel is a few mm out of dish though.

The brakes were a little bit of a gamble. I couldn't find any review of the Origin 8's but I figured that the EuroX/Spooky/Frogglegs style brakes are generally the same and pretty straight forward. When I first got them I noticed one of the springs was way shorter and different shaped than the others and cause a very noticeable difference in tension. Brian from Niagara Cycle Work as well as who ever runs Origin 8's twitter account were extremely awesome. Brian sent out an new, complete small parts packet no questions asked. Origin 8 was also very responsive and checked in to make sure everything was going well. Seriously can't say enough good things about both companies right now.

Do you have any compatibility problems with the Shimnao BB and FSA cranks?

I did a lot of looking for this actually and based my purchase off of the info in this thread.

Take away: Gossamer and Energy are compatible with Shimano but the higher end cranks are not.


Side note. SPD pedals are stupidly easy to regrease if you follow the park tools directions. Pretty neat system.

Hit a snag. Its looking like the 6208 RD isn't going to work. It will shift 1-7 just fine but the 8 cog gives it fits. I've tried routing the cable on either side of bolt as well as running the "ghost gears" 2 on the high side, 2 on the low side and 1 on either side. 2 on the high side seemed to work the best but it still doesn't want to shift up to the 28.

My thinking with this is two fold. The RD was made for 6sp SIS and gets wonky on the extremes of its travel and it was never designed to take a 28t cog.

Still playing with it but I have a 6500 RD on the way. I have only heard success stories when using more modern RDs. I've not come across anybody using the older 6sp stuff at all.

Aright in addition to the RD (should be here tomorrow) I won an auction for a Centaur FD for 10 bucks. I don't know if this is necessary but I noticed the shifting with the 6500 FD is really really stiff and I have read a couple of things talking about the possibility of stripping the indexing on the shifter. Figured It was pretty cheep insurance.

I also just picked up a set of Alex DC 19 rims laced to supposedly sealed bearing Formulas. The auction also included a new set of Maxxis Raze tires and a somewhat used set of Kenda Kwests. 85 bucks out the door so I am pretty pleased with that, especially if they are actually sealed cartridge bearings.

Last, I have white Deda tape on the way to cap the whole thing off.

Comming in right around 775. This includes both RDs and both sets of wheels. Minus the tubular wheel set and tires I am under 700 which is what I was shotoing for once things got going. Originally I wanted to see if I could do it for less but realized that I and too impatient. I call this concept time value of bike... Still pretty happy with the numbers considering I have a two sets of wheels and 3 pairs of tires.

Very happy to report that the 6500 RD solved the shifting issues straight away.

It rides really really nice, the fit is about spot on. I think I have been riding frames a size too small up until about a year ago.

The shifting works amazing well. I actually got in to a semi heated discussion at a LBS yesterday about the set up, some people just don't like thinking out side the box I guess. That is part of the reason I avoid most of them but I've digressed.

The clincher wheelset for this bike should be in Lawrence tomorrow along with black tires that are less visually offensive. This silver set will go back to the road bike. I am resisting the urge to glue up the tubulars until it gets closer to the fall.

White tape may have been a mistake.

the campy rimmed wheelset will look even better.

the white tape doesnt look bad but black will look good as well. i used the deda faux carbon on my cross bike. it is cheap and cleans very easily. even the white stuff wipes right off with soap and a rag.

Got the new wheels and tires in today. IMO it looks way way better with the black/black combo, not to mention the Maxxis are 35c compared to a narrow 30c. It looks more like a bike I would ride off road now.
