Hey rubbertramps out there!!


I've got a Surly LHT 56cm Frame and fork. But im not sure what kind/brand/model of Drivetrain and components to get.

Im planning to cycle round the world on this bike. So i guess i'll need components that are durability strong and versatile.

Stock build, replace/upgrade as parts wear out. If you're truly planning on going around the world, you'll likely finish with a very different bike than when you started.

get basic stuff. Make sure the 5mm screws used to secure fenders/racks to the frame are good ss.

Bring it by the shop, no problem,
i didn't get the remotely operated drone arm function,
and keyboards are not hands on.


Surly assumes derailleur stuff for a drive train.. My choices were not recent,

friction shifting wont screw up if not kept in adjustment , like indexing.

I built a 48/40 spoke wheelset , spare spokes in the wheel .

top quality steel tube racks : 1st bruce gordon. 2nd Tubus .

the wide range of the ratios matter more than the number of 'speeds'.

If you're going round the world 26" wheels are easier to find replacement parts for in Asia, Africa, India, S.America...

I agree with imi, 700c wheels will need you to have air mail drops

set up at home to get parts shipped to you, when you find there is no place to buy them

in quite rural places.

Apparently when a couple cracked a hub flange on their tandem, in the Andes, the manufacturer
Rohloff, got another hub shell sent to them to rebuild their hub.

WWW does make things move quicker than sending stamped postage
around the world, to seek remote help.

I have had to stay in one place, a few weeks , to get a bank statement from
my Credit Union, to see what my Debit card use was costing me and what was left.

Try searching this Forum, and you will come up with a number of build opinions/recommendations for a LHT.

If you already have the frame/fork, you are already committed to a wheel size. If you prefer a wheel size, now is the time to fix it.

Try to return the frame and buy a built one from the dealer. They sell them that way to aid nooby's and first time buyers who lack the experience, skills, tools, etc., to be building up a bare frame from scratch. It will also increase your chances of having a good tour experience.

Please don't be offended if possible, but that is the best advise I can offer.
