Classic & Vintage - Barn full o' bikes - Carver, Mass

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
No affiliation...saw this on Boston CL, thought someone here might find something of value.

"I HAVE A BARN THAT IS SCHEDULED TO BE DEMOLISHED WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS . I HAVE OVER 300 BIKE WHEELS ALONG WITH SEVERAL BIKE FRAMES AND A FEW INTACT BIKES. I AM WILLING TO TRADE ALL THE BIKES FOR GOOD SOLID FIREWOOD. ALL U HAVE TO DO IS GET THEM ALL TAKEN OUT BEFORE THE BARN IS DEMOLISHED. U CAN USE THE PARTS TO FIX UP BIKES AND RESELL OR U CAN SCRAP THE BIKES AND GET MONEY FOR THE METAL EITHER WAY THIER IS HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS THIER. I NEED FIREWOOD FOR MY WOOD STOVE SO I AM WILLING TO TRADE"
If you do connect with this guy, and it turns out to be legit, please do me a favor and put aside a Racycle Pacemaker for me (if he has one).
Thanks!
Lee
He's posted before, and it's been put on the forums before.
I'd love for someone to prove me wrong, but I'm thinking it's a haul of murrays, huffys, and free spirits.
It's all junk, rusty, crusty, junk. Plus that barn has been coming down at the end of the month for like 3 months now.

Something tells me he's looking for someone to demolish the barn for him; hence, the firewood.

I'll use my big fuggin spaceship, with a magnet. Get those bikes outta there quick!

I would have flagged that post as phoney if it came up on my craigs.

I ran across a Barn Full of Bikes once and there were approximately 200 bikes stored there. Sadly, the interior of the barn was damp and everyone of the bikes had suffered considerable oxidation damage. Steel and aluminum parts were shot, for the most part.
Put another way, not one decent bicycle came out of that old barn. Not one though there were some interesting old road bikes and roadsters. Even an antique, or two, but nothing worth the restorer's tool box.
Anyway, just thought I would mention it. There are guys, just like me, who collect lots of bike stuff. What happens to that stuff when that someone passes away?
The barns are out there!!!

I've seen places like that in various neighboring towns here in northern Michigan. Huffy's, varsity's, Murray's....all "vintage and rare" :)
I've come across a few barns full o' bikes. Unfortunately they were full of chain store bicycles with sa few entry level, brand name bicycles. I have yet to see anything even mid-range, but you never know when one will crop up. (Crop up - that's a farm joke for you city slickers).

It wasn't a fake ad, but it was a rusty pile of marginal stock.

I've seen exactly one true "barn find", which was a '66 Schwinn Twinn DeLuxe 5-speed, blue with chrome fenders, parked on the hay in the barn. It was too rusted even for me to accept. The asking price was $100. When I listed all the reasons it wasn't worth that, the old farmer took me aside and said it was his wife's tandem and the only reason they were asking $100 is that it belonged to his wife and she was unhappy about selling it. He said he'd take $50 for it. As it was so rusted it wouldn't even roll, I had to decline, thinking of what my wife would say if I brought it home.
It's true that "stored all its life in a barn" doesn't guarantee anything about a bike's condition. Actually, I think it guarantees it is rusted beyond hope, unless the barn was a modern, climate-controlled pole barn.
Yeah, I drove out to a barn full of old bikes a couple of months ago. He sure had a lot of bikes. Unfortunately it was mostly junk. The couple that were worth anything he saw on Fleabay going for "a lot of money!" So he thought he was sitting on a pot-o-gold. The only thing he had that I would have liked to get my hands on was an original Swing Bike (that needed a lot of work.) I couldn't come to terms on anything, even on a bulk deal.
It's getting harder to find good deals with the internet and shows like American Pickers getting people thinking their junk is worth a fortune.

The guy lives about 3 minutes from me, and I looked at the stuff months ago, and it's a bunch of trash. Half of the roof has been down for at least a year, and all the Huffy's are trashed.
I had a friend that mentioned that he had raced quite a bit in the 60-70's. He had about a month to live, canser, and I went to his house to help him get his model airplanes in order to give away. In his garage was all his old bikes. Many high end racing bikes from the 70's with Campy parts on them. Here is the sad part, none of it was usable. All of it had been left for 30 years in his previous homes basement and all of it was corroded solid. Wheel rims were rusted through and frames had rust holes in them. No seat post or stem was ever going to come out. He died a month later and his wife was sure it all was worth a lot of money and I had tried to deceiving her husband. He kept it from me as he didn't want me to see how he had let it all go. I believe he wanted to give it all to me but his wife stopped him.
