Folding Bikes - Data-base to find which rims EASILY fit with which tires in the 451 world.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Let's start a data-base to find which rims EASILY fit with which tires. My issue is with 451 tires, they seem not very compatible with 451 rims. If you know better please let us know.
This is what i posted on another thread:
Some tires and some rims are just crazy difficult to mount and dismount even though the numbers on the rim and tire are the same.
For instance Schwalbe Stelvios and FMF Power-Moto rims (both 451) make getting a flat or changing a tire a 65 min. ordeal. If you do it in public people think you have never changed a tire before! Mounting is MUCH harder than dismounting them. Tried Velocity rims and it was just as difficult.
The guys from Schwalbe need to have a lunch-meeting with the people who manufacture 451 rims. I am sure they could come to an agreement on what 451 actually means.

I also tried Primo Comets with the Velocity rims and it was also hard going.

Now to be clear, I am not new to changing tires on all sorts of rims. I have been doing it first with 20" BMX rims in the mid 70's to 700cc tires as recently as last week so that is what? 40 yrs of changing tires and I have never had such a difficult time as I have with 451's. Lastly, I really love the Stelvios & own 3 of these expensive, nice tires. I want to continue rolling with them.

I just tried my Schwalbe Durano + SunRingle Assault rims - did it by hand with no tools as per the youtube video I once posted. It was tight but the technique did it, with a bit of finger strain. Took about 30s.

Just mounted a Panaracer Minits Lite one the Sun Ringle Assault rim. Besides the bit of difficulty that a non-rigid Kevlar bead poses, the actual mounting was not particularly hard. I didn't mount the Durano again so I don't have a direct comparison but mounting the Panaracer was a little easier than the Durano from memory.

So I would call the Durano and Panaracer as not particularly hard on the Sun Ringle Assault rims.

velocity synergy and schwalbe durano don't even need levers to mount them.
I'm pretty sure someone could just slip these off if they were strong enough.

Not too comforting of a thought when they flat, however.

Velocity aero rims and Alex 390's in 451 here... have mounted most everything available on either brands, other than knobbies ... Panaracer, Primo (all sizes), Stelvio, Durano, IRC ... can't remember any of them giving me undo trouble .. what has given me trouble, but in 406, are genuine Rolf wheels and Continental Grand Prix tires .. it would almost be worth sending the combination to Australia and having Jur film his no tool approach in real time ... with audio ...

Heh heh those 406 contis are a match for me. The last pair are on Connie's bike and that will be the end of them.

OK in fact I accept that challenge - contis on Velocity Aeroheat rims, filmed with audio. Watch this space...

I have a Primo Comet 1 3/8" tire on a Sun CR-18 451 rim on the back of my Bike Friday and it is by far the easiest tire/rim combination that I've ever had for tire removal and installation. When deflated I usually end up pulling the tire off the rim just in the process of taking the wheel out of the frame. And installation is also trivial - the only concern is to start inflating it carefully while checking that the bead is evenly seated. I wouldn't want to have this combination on the front wheel due to concerns of the tire rolling off the rim in the event of a sudden flat, but on the rear wheel I'm less concerned - and it has never actually happened when I have gotten flats.

On the front of the bike I have an IRC Roadlite 1 1/8" tire on a slightly more aero Sun rim (don't know the model name). That combination is one of the hardest I've encountered for removing the tire.
