Im in the market for a new set of cranks for a single speed project. I've noticed all the 10spd cranks are on sale now and cheaper than the 9spd versions. Is it as simple as changing the rings to make them 9sp compatible? I understand the price of the rings makes this a non issue, but I'm just curious if thats the only difference or is there more to it?

you can use 10sp rings on 9sp no problem.
they'll work better to boot.

You need a crank with just one chainring then, and the chainring teeth
minus any of the derailleur shifting features.. maybe even a thick chainring, for 1/8" chains.
never/mind the 9and 10 speed stuff its not the right parts.

I have run 9 speed, 10 seed, and purpose built single speed chainrings on my single speed. It doesn't matter on a single speed (unless you buy BMX parts which is a whole separate issue).

You will, however, need single speed chainring bolts if you want to run a single chainring on a double crank. They are shallower. The standard chainring bolts you have will bottom out before they tighten up enough to ride.
