how long will people wait in line to be among the first to see it? guessing the die-hards will block off a solid week to camp out. the hobbit is going to be a two-movie project-right? i won't camp out but i will try to catch the first am show after a week or two. lotr was so fantastic that this can't help but be the same.

^^I've never camped out for a movie and don't intend to start now but like you I will surely see it within the first week or two. I'm glad Peter Jackson is involved.

I'm there on opening day; the LOTR trilogy was the biggest and longest film event of my film-loving life - I've shelled out a lot of cash for tickets, theatrical versions, extended editions, soundtracks, and the like, and the 3 consecutive holiday seasons of LOTR goodness helped to blunt the blow of suffering through the first few years of the worst presidential administration in modern US history...

The production video blog (http://the-hobbit-movie.com/2011/12/24/the-hobbit-production-video-5/) is neat. I'm amazed how much stuff they have to move to the location shoots.

December 14th.

Looks really cool. I hope he produces The Silmarillion.

If he does that, I would expect at least 3 or 4 more movies.

Is that even in the works? I'd think if they broke up some of the story lines it might work (ie: Children of Huron as a stand alone movie, etc.)

Well, it's just a couple weeks until the opening, do you have your tickets for the midnight show yet??? I have to say that I'm a bit more excited about the Life of Pi, but will see the Hobbit also.

Other holiday films you are looking forward to?

I just can't get my head around the Hobbit being 3 movies.
I've been watching the special edition LOTR series on cable, have to say it
really fills in a lot that was missing from the original release.
I hope he doesn't add too much or vary from the story line like parts of LOTR.

Life of Pi looks interesting if nothing else.

Sorry it looks like it varies even more. Just checking the trailer shows a huge variation. I wish I could see some stills to get an idea of just how thin some of the dwarfs and and how short their beards are.

It also looks like the departure from the story does not take long, as in teh first entrance of the dwarfs is changed for some slapstick comedy.

I do not intend to spend money to watch this.

From what I've read the length is due to Jackson including everything about the finding of the
ring and the battles etc. from the LOTR appendices of which I think Tolkein wrote 346.
Probably go see it this weekend and will report back.

Yes, I was there at midnight to see it (short review on the Movie Rating thread); it was great: Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins, and it was terrific to have an entire film (and two more to look forward to) of Ian McKellen's Gandalf the Grey.

I saw it in IMAX first, then again a few days later in 48FPS 3D (which I did not much care for - too much Soap Opera Effect).

As much as I liked it, it did not strike as much a chord as The Fellowship of the Ring did 11 years ago, perhaps because that was the first foray into Peter Jackson's world of Tolkien's Middle Earth... the emotion of Gandalf's fall in Moria, and Frodo and Sam heading out on their own, really pulled me into the story like no film has in my lifetime.

Anxious to see it again, but in regular 2D digital, to see how it will look at home in several months :-)
