Murray was a department store brand so the bike is probably nothing too special. Probably a response to the hugely popular Schwinn wheelie bikes of the 60s. You know the year of the bike and have a catalog picture, what other info were you looking for?

That is not all i know. These bikes were made specificly for the boy scouts for 2 years only 1975 and 1976. They where made by murray ohio manufacturing company in brentwood, tennessee. From what i can tell they have since been bought out by another company and now produce lawn mowers. This is a promotional ad that ran in the boys life magazine for the cub scouts and boy scouts back in 1975 and 1976. I can not find this bike itself anywhere which leads me to believe that it is very rare. If you enlarge the photo you will see that is has scout emblems on the seat, chain guard and front bar. I am looking for a rarity and maybe even a value. Thanks

I know about craigslist. I have an account with them and have sold items from that site already. I am not currently looking to sell this bike. I am simply looking for more information. I thought that most of the people on a bike forum would have great knowledge of bikes in general. Does anyone or am i in the wrong place? Is this bike not rare? Have you or anyone else seen one of these bikes before? It was made just for the scouts. Did you even look at the link that i posted and enlarge the photo to read and see this bike?

Try one of the boy scout collectible groups. Google is your friend. As others mentioned, the Murray bike was a crapper. At the same time, there are boy scout collectors (NOT bicycle collectors) that may have interest from that end. I have sold a few oddball boy scout collectibles (not bikes) on ebay (anything from old uniforms, boy's life stuff, etc), and did pretty well with some of them.

I can also tell you that the boy scout stuff is hit or miss. Some of the items do well, others don't get any response. Seeing the lack of response to that vintage bicycle ad is a clue (negative). Once an item is highly sought after, collectors often want other items that go with it: brochures, price lists, ads, maintenance books, or whatever.

They may have made this model just for the scouts, but that does not make it any better than worse than the other crappy bikes they made. Notice they had nine models of Scout Murrays? Bet they were all standard Murray products, with the boy scout paint, and maybe a couple of decals.

You really need a scout collector. Its all about scouting, and nothing about the bike itself (other than its link to scouting).


Ultimately, value of a niche item like your bike is determined through an auction on ebay. Local interest would most likely be zilch.

Basically not much, except to a Boy Scouts of America memorabilia collector. As a Murray bicycle alone maybe $50 to $75. A non Schwinn "Stingray" type bicycle has never garnered much collector interest with very few exceptions.

Rare does not always equal high value.

Designed and sanctioned by the boy scouts of America. Nine models were made available which incldued 27", 26" and 24" 10 speeds, 26" 3 speeds, coaster brake and the 20" eliminator hi-rise, as well as two motocross styles. All models were finished in Scout colors. Make yourself a part of the Scout safety program and earn your merit badge on the official Scout bicycle.

Typical case of someone unhappy to find out their item isn't worth a fortune. Learn to get over it. We do know about bikes, that's why everyone put your bike into the department store category it belongs in. As a bike it is worth very little. As a scouting item, maybe it's worth something. I suggest you ask a boy scout expert.

I know these answers; do you? If not, then you know LESS than I do, which enables me to tell you to STFU. (I could do it, anyway, but I just wanted to ask you those questions....)

Actually, that bike is rare indeed, my boyscout leader is looking for that exact bike. I overheard him state he would pay top dollar, not positive but I think he said up to 3,000 U.S. dollars. Give me your full name, address, social security number, bank account number and date of birth and I will have him wire the money to you. Of course I would expect some kind of finders fee, though.

Wouldn't being the official Boy Scout bicycle be like Pepsi is the official NFL cola?

the bike really is a piece of garbage, and the only thing special about it is that Murray tried to exploit a paid commercial Boy Scout connection. The only way you will get money from it is if someone wants it for the Boy Scout connection and knows nothing at all about bikes. I always resented the companies like Murray, Columbia, AMF, and Huffy that cynically made bike shaped objects to sell to gullible parents.
