My wife grew up in Eastern Europe & had no bike as a child but she has learned to ride on a new Schwinn Sierra. I'd like to improve the bike by getting new tires. It currently has Innova 24X1.75 with a fairly heavy tread.
Will a narrower tire work on this rim? Would it make much difference in the ride/speed to get, say, Continental Tour Ride tires. Or am I barking up the wrong tree in trying to give her a better ride. Thanks.

Too bad you couldn't get any help with this thread Zock. I'm in the market for tires too. The size I need is 26X2.0. I'm going to bicycle shops and doing searches on Google to compare. My riding is on paved trails only. I like the Serfas Drifter city bicycle tire. Very affordable also. How come nobody takes these questions to a bike shop? Walk in, ask your question, walk out with appropriate stuff. If it costs a couple of dollars more, you make it up on the shipping.
You can certainly make the bike roll easier with skinnier,higher pressure, lighter tires. There are trade-offs: harder ride, possibly reduced stability, increased vulnerability to punctures.

Since I have a mountain bike I think it's smart to keep the same size tires. 2" wide. Otherwise it would look funny.

I tried two local bike shops. The most I could get out of them was: we don't carry 24" tires.

"Look funny" to whom, and why do you care? Nobody gives a crap what anybody else's bike looks like. Is it "smart" to set the bike up so it works less than optimally for the kind of riding you do? You bought it to ride, so get it the way you want it and ride it. If the bike shop won't help, find a new shop or order online.
